View Full Version : Whisper subsonic powder options
I have been trying different powders and loads for the last few months and have had a ton of fun doing it. Being an engineer, it is in my nature to always look for a better way. With that being said, I have some loads that work pretty good but am looking for more testing and trials..that is part of the fun, isn't it?
I have tried
AA9- does not work in my gun
H110-works ok but but needs some development, pretty finicky
4227- works awesome
1680- works totally awesome
322 works better than H110 and looks promising
Looking at the powder burn rate charts, it appears that my optimum burn rate is between 76 and 100. (of course, just a general observation and by no means substantiated and know that many other factors need to be considered). 4198 falls into this area.
Question: Has anyone tried 4198 for subsonic loads in an AR with a 10.5" barrel? (240,220 and 208 gr bullets)
I have found some load data for RL no. 7 that works for some people, but have found no data on 4198. How about WW748? Anybody tried that?

I have had good luck with 296, and AA#9 in sub. loads for my Bolt.
4227 and 1680 are the stars in my semi!

I had tried H4198 over some 200gr SMK's. Start at 13.0 and work down from there.
11.8 was a little over 1000fps in my rifle. It was the first powder I tried that would cycle my action with subsonic loads. Then I got some AA1680 (which works great), and haven't loaded anything with H4198 since.

What size is your gas port? I have experience with 2400 and Ramshot Enforcer with 220's, and I'm getting ready to test some 208 AMAX's with 2400 soon. I'll post results upon completion of testing.

My gas port is .115 and in the pistol position.
Thanks for the replies. Yup, the 4227 and 1680 definitely work in my gun but both of those are somewhat difficult to find in my area. I was asking about the other powders because they seem to be available and i might be able to standardize powders with other loads.

I use 8.5gr of 2400 with 240 SMK's and 8.0 with 208gr AMAX's, both are around 1030fps from my 10.5" and cycle the action.

1680 and similar burn rates are just a tad on the slow side for the 10" AR barrels. The Enforcer / 2400 burn rate seems to be about ideal for the shorties.

8.6 gns of N110 with a Remington 7.5...2.09 oal is producing sub moa groups @ 100yds in my 10.5" AR average velocity is 1005.
I used 8.2 gns of AA9 with good results just not as good as N110

N110 is pretty much the school solution for accurate ammo. At least in all the barrels I have played with.
Expensive, hard to find, not as quiet as some faster powders, but it is accurate and consistent.

Sinclair has it. Grafs has it. But yeah, you will never find it in a store. I assume I can't find the powder I want in a store and really it would not even enter my mind to try to find powder in a store.

The local Sportsmans Whorehouse and Cabelas normally has it on the shelf. But man they are proud of it.
I just order it 16 lbs at a time from Powder Valley along with the rest of that years order. You can get up to 48 pounds for one hazmat fee.
