Got a Salvage (literally) 342 Hornet action as a guy was cleaning up a garage sale for basically nothing.. couldnt find a stock...

Chambered up a 7 twist barrel in 22 Hornet and its shooting 75 grain Hornady amaxs ...subsonic...into pretty good groups...stabilized @ 100yds.... magazine feeding isnt the best but I'll work on that.
Gotta try 80's if the temp ever gets above zero again.

I know its easier with a 22 rimfire... before some retard starts blowing that horn.

The only thing I can see to laugh about is your temp is below zero. It was nice today 78, tomorrow is only a high of 69.:tongue:

Spook I think its cool, I Load subs for my 5.7x28. my buddies think I'm nuts but it sounds like a finish nailgun and is pretty accurate ...Keep us posted!

Cool. I like. I was thinking about something similar for some time now too.
I'm wondering how much improvment is gained in interior and exterior ballistics compared to a .22lr, but haven't done any calculations yet.
What I also like is that accuracy is more "controlable" I guess since it's up to the reloader. When shooting rimfire you sometimes are having a hard time finding a brand of ammo that shoots really well in your rifle, and then you have to buy the whole lot ^^

The problem with rimfire subsonic is that max weight so far is 60 grains in the Aguila line. It takes a special twist rate to stabilize, and won't have the punch of the 75 grainers. That being said, I have a subsonic load in .223 that utilizes the RCBS cast boolit that casts out at 62 grains with my wheelweight alloy. Fun little round...

If I could find a hornet action for cheap, I would do the very same thing. Two barrel blanks sitting in the corner for the very project you just completed. Care to share any load data?

I bumped into this on the longrangehunting forum, and thought of Spook's Hornet:

I rebarreled a 22 Hornet for a customer many years ago. It was a Ruger #1 and he wanted to shoot the 80 gr VLD bullets out of it and drive them to subsonic velocity and use a suppressor. The rifle worked very well. It was actually a pretty consistant load that produced 1050 fps with the 80 gr. We used a 1-7 twist barrel that was 22" in length and threaded for a can. I believe he used an AWC can but do not know for sure.

Anyway, Max loads could beat supersonic by a fair margin but he worked with the subsonic loads mostly. It was easily a 1 moa rifle at 500 yards and at 100 yards it played with 1/2 moa with most loads. Not to bad for a ruger #1. It was a neat little rifle.

To do this we drew up a specific reamer for the project. He used Winchester cases so I drew the reamer up around those brass making it a very tight speced reamer in the body and neck dimensions. Normal 22 Hornet reamers are built very loose to old black powder specs in most cases which are VERY LOOSE and not good for case life or anything else for that matter.

If you do this, get a reamer made to the correct dimensions and you will be much happier with the finished product.

I personally prefer a 221 FB with a heavy bullet as it has a much stronger case if your looking to load to top pressures.
