View Full Version : Official Rent Quarterbore's DPH AK-47 Flat Bending Jig - Second Tour
Quarterbore
08-23-2005, 02:19 PM
NOTICE!!! This rotation of the Jig at these terms is NOW CLOSED!!!!
I have started a new thread to prepare for a 3rd Roation with different terms. If anybody wants to rent the jig and they are not on the list on Page 1 of this thread then you need to sign up in the new thread here:
http://www.quarterbore.net/forums/showthread.php?t=875
Members as listed below will get the jig as described in this thread before the 3rd Rotation starts!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My last round of renting (http://www.quarterbore.net/forums/showthread.php?t=306) my 555th jig just didn't work out so great and it became extremely frustrating for me because people didn't let me know when they got my tools, they don't take care of the tools when they used them, they didn't let me know when they are done, they took forever to ship them to the next person when they were done, they didn't let me know when they were shipped.... or they simply lied to me. I am very reluctant to try this again but I have had at least three people contact me to express interest in renting one of my jigs and honestly most guys where great.
The problem is still that the shipping from me plus any rent plus shipping back to me would cost a person about $56 or more (est $18 shipping w/ insurance + $20 rent + $18 to return). That is just too much money and that is why I was trying to run the rotation as I had done before so, I am going to give this ONE last try.... but before you sign up for this list:
You must agree to the following terms:
1. You will POST IN THIS THREAD when you receive the jig.
2. You will POST IN THIS THREAD when you are done using the jig.
3. You will pay shipping plus insurance for $200 WITH A TRACKING NUMBER.
4. You will POST IN THIS THREAD what the tracking number is as soon as you ship.
5. You MUST subscribe to this thread or allow e-mail from the board so that I can let you know when you should pay your rent and so that you will know what is happening.
As for costs, I am going to stick with the original cost structure...
Your Rent of $20 includes The use of a DPH Arms Flat bending Jig and my grease to do upto five flats. Each extra flat after five I would like to request that an extra $0.50 be paid to help cover the additional wear on the jig. You will also be expected to then ship the jig to the next person as described above. I will try to have two people paid in advance so that the jig can keep moving...
Examples:
You Bend 1 to 5 flats - $20 + shipping to next person
You Bend 6 flats - $20 + shipping to next person + $0.50 in the box)
You Bend 20 flats - $20 + shipping to next person + $7.50 in the box (15 extra at $0.50)
You host a build party and you all do 40 flats = $20 + shipping to next person + $17.50 in the box (5 included + 35 extra at $0.50/each)
Now, if you have someone over to use the jig or two people on the list live close to each other... you can build together or share the tools... all I ask is that you POST WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE and be aware that the person that is signed up here is responsible for my tools.
I will maintain a list here of who is on this list and where the jig is at based on the posts THAT YOU MAKE BELOW telling EVERYBODY where the jig is at....
So, please post below if you want on this list and your post asigns you your position in the line...

I don't know... alot depends on how this goes... Just the same, I am only renting the flat bending jig so if you have access to a press there is no reason to have to build anytime soon. I think I have about 4 or 5 flats that are all bent from testing the jigs that I still have not finished. These are now AK receivers and I keep them in the top of the gun safe so when I want to build I can just dig one out....
It's up to you, but flats are about $15 (or less) so you could order 5 or even 10 and bend them up and just put them away for any future builds you may want to do. With the jig I include everything you need except the press and a 12-ton press will likely do anything you need to ever do and you can get one for under $125.
Either way, if I am still renting the jig you can get it then or I can add you to the list when you have a press you can use.

Hey Quarterbore, I would like to rent your jig when it becomes available. I have access to a press that will work and have 5 flats (probably more if I get the jig) that desire to be bent :) Anyway I am over at AR15.com or AK47.net under the same name plus if you want to check out the positive feedback on my e-bay account (I will provide on request) you will see I am trustworthy and do things in a timely manner. Officially sign me up please and I will check back in here to see what to do. Thanks, Lance

Ummm, what makes you think I have these? You do know I am not an SOT, right? I do have some info from the Patent Office but it would take me longer to find it then it on one of my old disks then it would take you to search the US Patent Office for Glock and get it yourself...
UPDATE ON THE JIGS
I received BOTH jigs this week Weds and Thursday and bot jigs came back in good shape. I have a surprize for you all in that you will NOT be getting either of these jigs however! I just purchased a DPH jig that I will be sending out for this rental period. The DPH Jig has been shipped and I should have it next week.
I will be selling one of my two 555th jigs. The jig I will be selling is my Jig #2 from my previous rotation and I am looking to sell that for $100 + shipping. If anybody on the list wants that jig you have essenially first dibs (I did offer it to another guy) and first person that says they want it gets it...
I will be listing the jig for sale tomorrow or Sunday (9/3 or 9/4/05) at latest. I will be starting the list on the first post as soon as I have the DPH jig and I am sure that there is no issues with it. I will bend a flat and take some new pics and post directions as the DPH jig is essentailly the same as the 555th jig but I see damage on my 555th jig where guys just didn't do what they should have done. I hope with better instructions my tools will be better taken care of.

Great News!!!
I finally got the DPH Jig and it looks great! It has the alignment pins and this baby is solid... I am going to bend a flat or two tonight and take lots of pics plus mark up the jig to help prevent some of the dammage that I saw with the old jigs. You will see in the pics...
I am starting the list now and the first two people on the list will be asked to pay. Sorry for the delay but this new jig is well worth the delay.

I used the jig tonight to bend a flat and the jig does a really nice job. I took 140 pics of the process and tools and it will take me some time to go through the files and pick the best and most important pics and cut down the images to a reasonable size and add text... I will try to get this done as soon as possible. The files at this point take up 118MB of disk space!
Following is a photo of the tools that I will be shipping:
http://www.quarterbore.com/dph-jig-01/tools-01.jpg
Note:
DPH Flat Bending Jig
One LONG Piece of Steel to be used BETWEEN Press arm and Jig
One Short Piece of Steel to be used between jig and hammer when poping jig out of form after bending flat
1 4mm Allen Wrench
1 5mm Allen Wrench
Can of all purpose grease and small brush to apply it with
(Note I will not be shipping my 12-ton press so you will need one to use the jig!)
I have uploaded a bunch of pics of the flat I bent tonight including some side by side pics of my new bent flat next to a 100% OOW receiver that I own. You can browse thos pictures here:

I am #2 on the list. I paid today and I am ready to go. Well, not really...my press is arriving on the 13th :D and my flats should be here any day. The timing should be perfect, since #1 could have it for more than a week right?

I did hear from DarkKnight and he will be paying soon. I will send the jig UPS Ground (remember we want a tracking number) so if he pays today and I can get this shipped today I really doubt he will be done before next weekend.
As an aside, if you look at my pics of my receiver you will see some scratches on the flat I bent. This was a new flat for me and it seemed that the steel was a little harder then the tapco flats I have used in the past as it seemed to take more force to bend these. This may be the reason for the scratches but these scratches will buff out and will be covered later.
I think if I was to have helped the jig out by LIGHTLY starting the bend before I put the jig "die" into the "form" that there may have been less marking as well. If anybody does decide to put a little pre-bend of the flat just remeber to be careful on how you do this to ensure that the bend occurs at the corner where you want the bend and not somewhere else... The other fix might be to sand and buff the top edge of the jig to remove the rough edges but as I said before, I never had these scratches with other flats so it may be something with this new flat I tried to use.

Darknight... I screwed up and I am VERY sorry about it! I accidently sent the jig to mwebster who was second on the list. I had printed out the paypal slips and took them with me to ship the package and I just messed up. You will get it next and I am VERY SORRY!
SO everybody understands the pricing for shipping...
Shipping from me in PA to Monte in UT cost me $25.65 + $1.20 for insurance on the package ($26.85). Obviously given the rent is only $20 I need to have a few people rent the jig before I recover the inital sending the jig out.

I just saw this note today.
That's ok, because I still have to get my butt over to HF or some place to buy a press.
Any chance we can get a rivet tool or a barrel press jig to rent as well?
BTW anyone in Northern VA looking to do this, and that doesn't have a press, you can buy my press off of me when I'm done. No room in my casa for such a big item....

You don't need the 20-ton press as I have used a 12-ton for quite some time with no real problems but the extra working room that you gain with the 20-ton is nice. The 20-ton is on sale and they have a 20% off coupon that expires 9/15/2005 (tomorrow). Even though I havethe 12-ton I just went out and bought a 20-ton last night. I do not think the 12-ton is on sale but 20% is still pretty good even if you go with the smaller unit.
Now, if space is an issue, the 12-ton is nice as it is portable (Ie lighter). I can carry mine around by myself and it takes up very little room in a garrage or basement. I have found myself using my press for all kinds of stuff now that I have it... bending - flattening, squashing things, holding things while I drill or cut them, etc... A press is a handy tool or so I have found.

Yeah, last week they had the 12 ton on sale for 109 or so, and stupid me missed it.
They also have a 12 ton with a A frame instead of the square frame. Would the A frame one be ok too?
The 6 ton is more in my price range, I just don't want to get one and find out it's barely what I need and I have a huge hassle with it.

The 12-Ton A-Frame will work just fine.
It is currently on sale online for $99.

I have used the 12-ton H-frame and I am moving up to the 20 to get more room... The 12-ton "A" will work as KillJoy149 said and is just a little smaller then the 12-ton "H" press as far as working area. The 6-ton is WAY TOO SMALL and you will no be able to press barrels or do a number of things you will need (want) to do with it. Print the advertisment for the 12-ton "A" press and the 20% off coupon and you will have a useful press for about $80. It is light enough that you can cary it around to where you want it so storage is pretty easy.

Have you seen this:
Homier 12 ton press (http://www.homier.com/detail.asp?dpt=&cat=&sku=03945)
It looks like the exact same press as the HF one. If you live in the right place, it might be cheaper, even with the shipping. It can ship to me for under $100. I noticed that shipping prices did go up recently....!@#$%^& gas prices.

I was thinking about making a jig but for under 30.00 to rent it wont pay my time build one. For a reference just look up my name on Ebay and I post a bit on 1919a4.com.

P.S.
I only have 2 flats right now how much time would I have before it was shipped this way? I'll call Tapco and get 3 more.

Glad to see you got on... You should have time to get your flats... Most people can bend their flats in a weekend but shipping takes a week between each person and some people can take a couple weeks... So, you likely have at least a month to get your flats and tapco has them in stock and ship within a day... ak-builder.com is slower in shipping but even they should be able to get you them.

OK QB,
The package was waiting for me when I got home from work tonight. A couple hours later my flats were done! Worked great. No issues, no problems. I repacked it exactly as it was and it is ready to roll. Email me the next victim's info and I will send it on. And THANKS for this rental gig....a nice thing for you to organize and setup. Everybody play nice and take care of the gear....or else.
:ak47:
Just an observation: The AK's I've built before were constructed on receivers from Coldsteel or the laser-cut fold-n-weld ones and they are much thicker and feel so much more solid than these bent flats. I guess I will see how they build. It seems like a trade between a solid receiver and all the "features" and ease of these flats.

Yea, stamped receivers are a little thinner... look at some of my other threads here in the reinforcement plate especullay if you may shoot with a folded stock folded....
Sorry I never got the pics up for you as an example but it is pretty darned easy... I sent you a PM with the address for DarkKnight... Please post shipping info when the tools are shipped.

Great news... I never got the photos or directions up on the web... do you need them?
Just remember a couple things when you press...
1. NEVER press directly on the top of the jig - That will damage my new jig!
2. When pressing, start slowely moving the jig end to end with a little bit of pressing each time - this will give you a cleaner corner with less streching of the receiver.
3. When bending the top rails over, use a light force as opposed to massive blows... work end to end and you can get he top rail to bend over with very few dents or dings... Make sure you hammer has a clean face and any dents or dings in it will end up in your rail! You may also want to use a good buck between the top rail and the hammer to spread the blow... I have a couple I bent using a piece of steel as a buck and they look as good as any factory receiver...
Otherwise, the directions posted in the thread on bending a Tapco flat is what you need... I will try to get the pics of this new jig up but my time is so limited and I want to get a couple of my own builds done too!

This is out of the blue but I have decided not to bend my flats and I will be selling all my kits and parts. Nothing wrong with the jig, it looks nice, but something else has come up  Anyway it is right here in it's box ready to go so I will send it out as soon as I get the address. Thanks for the opportunity to rent the jig, sorry I tied it up for a few days.
(If anybody is interested in what I am getting rid of they can PM me for details.)
EDIT: Things changed and I am keeping my kits now, thanks to all that inquired about them though

I'm interested in buying some jigs if you sell them. I'd rent BUT you have had problems so I'd prefer to just buy outright if that's possible. I could send you a check for the price of the jig & once I'm done with it I'd return it & you could refund the difference to me.
If you prefer I'll have you do the bending & drilling needed & I'd pay you for the effort. I'm also interested in the AR jig-the heavy duty one. I'm also interested in buying any plans for the Glock switch,Lightning links,DIAS',etc. For informational purposes only, naturally. Basically,if it's politicaly incorrect I am in.
I don't understand to this day why ex-military aren't allowed to own full autos as a matter of course. We can carry them & use them while on duty but in public life we can't have them unless we have a lot of cash to put out. The '86 ban needs to be repealed. It just puts f/a's in the hands of people that can afford to lay out 3-15K for what should be a relatively inexpensive weapon. It's a BS legal farce that needs correcting just like the magazine ban-but that's just opinion on my part.I'd lie to see interest in this matter.
My regards, John B
Quarterbore
09-27-2005, 04:47 PM
You are confused... I am not selling the jig. I do have an AR-15 jig for doing an 80% lower but that is not for rent nor is it for sale. I do not have information on the full auto Glock stuff or as I indicated before I do not have info to share beyond what you can get at the patent office.
With a flat someone else can not bend the receiver for you and then send it to you... Once the flant is bent into a receiver the receiver is a firearm and must be handled as one. Perhaps you should start a new thread with more information on what you intend to do as perhaps you don't really want to do a flat at all. A 100% receiver is easier and doesn't require the tools it takes to build a flat.
I have a feeling this is not the correct deal for your needs and you would be best off buying your own jig at a website such as DPHArms or AK-Builder. This is a chance for guys to use mine so they don't need to buy a jig of their own.
Please confirm but I assume you want off this list. If you are interested in renting, it is as based on the first page of the thread.

I got an e-mail from Lanceman indicating that there are some minor issues with the jig. It seems the alignment pins have come free of the jig and he tried to fix it but felt it would be better if I repaired the jig.
So, the DPH jig is beng returned to me so that I can make the repairs. I will keep everybody informed of the status...
KillJoy149
10-03-2005, 03:55 PM
Man, I'm sorry to hear about that.
I hope it is something that is easily repairable.
Did the Pin break, or pull out? Was it only held in by a friction fit, or some other means?
KillJoy
Quarterbore
10-03-2005, 04:12 PM
We will have to see... it sounds like the pin may have been damaged before and held in by epoxy. The pin is only there to align the flat in the jig so it is not a structural part so epoxy should be fine to fix it. It sounds to me however that the pin had broke so it will need to get drilled out and because that pin is hardened steel it may be interesting to remove.
At this point I just need to get the jig and take a look at it...

I have said it before, and I will say it again.
WHY THE HELL CAN PEOPLE NOT TAKE CARE OF OTHER'S TOOLS?!?!?!?!?!?
I cannot believe the disregard of other's property, especially when they are letting you use it!
If I were not on the list for rental, I would say to not let it go back out. No need to have your tools FUBAR'd by someone who is blatently ungrateful.

Shipped the jig back to Quarterbore today:
Tracking number: 1ZR3A0750340553366
The jig worked great for the first 5 flats, no problems. On the 6th one when I removed the plate both pins remained in the block instead of the plate. One had been held in by some type of epoxy and the other had broke where it was welded on the other side of the plate. I'm not sure what caused it. I was going to drill through the plate and tack the pins back in but I didn't have any lucky in that due to the hardness of the steel/weld. Don't know what else I could have done from there besides glueing them back in and letting them come out again on the next person.

Guys,
I got the jig sometime in the past few days but I have not been at the house much. I have a bit of a crisis I am trying to help manage and I have not got to look at the jig yet. I need to get some things done and load the truck for some projects this weekend. If I get time I will look at the jig and see if there is a quick and easy way to fix the jig and get it out...
If I can't fix the alignment pins quickly, would a couple guys want to use the jig as is as all that would need to be done is measure the flat on each side to center it... that is the way my old 555th jig had worked and with the holes in the metal it should be easy to center...
Again, my family is dealing with a crisis at the moment so please understand if I am unable to get the jig back out for a couple days. I am not posting specifics of the crisis here as I do not want unneeded attention here... it will make sence in the future when I can share more!

Thanks for updating this for me... For those that d not know my brother suffered a home invasion and details are here:
http://www.quarterbore.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=133
It has been a long couple weeks but a group of guys came out this past weekend and helped finish up some projects for my Brother and his family but it is still going to be a long hall.
I spent some time last week looking at what the problem was and it looks like the alignment pins were mounted off center just a little. I didn't notice when I bent my flat but it was a new jig and I only bent one with it before sending it out. With use the bin that was improperly located simply bent the steel around the pin until it finally worked it's way free.
I have two DPH jigs and I am going to spend some time tonight getting my other jig marked up like I did to the other jig and I will just send my other jig out. I wasn't originally going to do this but it looks like I am going to need to make a new bottom plate for the jig that is damaged and the locations of those holes are critical.
The biggest issue now is I need to make up a huge number of hours at work or I don't get paid and my wife is starting to lose patience with all my time distractions as well...
So, I need to stamp the other jig to make it clear that people hould not press directly on the jig, plus I am going to build a smaller shipping box to reduce the shipping costs, and then I will try to get this shipped tomorrow (Oct-18th).
Sorry for the huge delay...

Hey, QB....my offer still stands for fixing the damaged Jig.
Just by your description, the hole the alignment pin sits in needs enlarged. Then, a piece of steel rod turned to press fit into the enlarged hole. Then the top part of that pin turned to the diameter of the hole in the Jig.
This is just my thought, actual milage may vary.
Don't worry about the timeframe on getting the Jig back out. Family first, then playthings :-)

If you guys are willing to get together you could simply split the original rent.. I still ask for $0.50/flat after five as obviously the jig is not going to last forever so I hope I can pay for the jig before I need to buy a replacement.
I am also willing you guy to do a hand off but if you want to still pay some rent that would help me out some as I have over $300 in the two jigs.
Just let me know what you guys do and who has the jig! Last go round I had problems with someone that figured he would try to be sneaky... you can see it in the last jig rental thread.

Like I said before... if you and tuolumnejim get together and you want to share the jig as a build party or team type thing that is fine with me... I just ask for a little money as per the terms for the extra flats because the jigs just don't last forever and I can't have the tools getting destroyed without them at least paying for themselves.

That is a Pain but I am not sure how to get around this and still make it fair (first come first use)... If I get the second jig fixed I might be able to keep one east coast and one west coast but even then we will have the jig trucking back and fourth from Maine to Florida or CA to Alaska...
If anybody has a suggestion I am all ears...

There isn't really a way doing it F-C-F-S. It just makes the shipping time / charges a bit more.

They came out perfectly! There was a little spring back after removing from the Jig, but a little hand pressure bent them straight and true.
Hopefully, the building of the rifles will go w/o error.

I bet you got a shipping notice from me in your e-mail... I am trying to get a new copy of an AK builder DVD together and send it to you... when you get it just take a look and send it with the jig. I understand the other one with the jig had a scratch or something so it wasn't working.

Guys, I just bought another DPH jig... yea I will be upto three now...
As soon as I get the new jig I will put it into circulation as I have just about paid for the one that we are circulating now from the rentals. Remember I need the jig to be used by about 3-people before I am covered for the inital shiping and the supplies I ship with the jig and I had to ship twice because of the damaged jig so I still have not managed to quite pay for the jig we have out much less the one that is dammaged!
Still, I will get the second jig and send it out ASAP as the line is getting pretty long now. I can use the damaged jig for my use or any build parties I may attend as it is until I get it fixed. I'll let everybody know how the new jig looks after I get it!
Here is the new jig: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=123&t=315961

You will be getting jig #2 first... (or is it jig #3?).... For the prupose of the rotations I will just refer to it as Jig #2. It is all packed up with grease, allen wrenches, instructional cd, and a fancy new case.
I expect shipping will be a little more because of the extra size and weight of the case but with the case inside a cardboard box we should be able to ship the tools for a LONG time before I have it fall apart.
I will post a tracking number tomorrow after it is on it's way!

Upon Reciving the jig shipping and packing was in tact . Jig did not look damaged.
However the plate with the locating pins sits off center on one end. It is off on the front trunnion side. When you have all the screws in except that one you can see the hole does not line up with the threaded hole , so when you tighten that screw it pulls it to the side a little.
I bent one you could see it was off by the holes on the bottom (paper weight)
ie. mag hole
we had to drill the front pin hole on the flat bigger so we could get it to set in the jig on center, then we were able to get one bent on center

How bad is this and are you sure that their is a problem with the locating hole pins? I have not found the time to take a piece of 1.25-in steel and redrill it to make a replacemnt for the bottom plate for the other jig yet so I guess I will need to fix two of these...
I am curious if something looks bent or why this would be off center now? I bent several flats with that jig before it was sent out of my own plus I did a build party where another 10 or so AKs were built from flats done on that jig.
Please advise accordingly as if the jig has a problem I should have you return it and I will have to look it over and see if I can fix it or I will put it into retirement. This jig at least lasted just about as long as it needed to for me to recover the cost of the jig but man I wish these would last longer.

Hey QB I am working with MK1271 bending the flats......it is not the locating pins themself........it is the last bolt bolt hole for tightning that bar to the rest of the jig.........when you have the jig all together you can see and feel that the plate with the pins is off to one side it is only on the front trunnion side of the jig.......we are going to try another flat tonight and see what happens...........

I see and I noticed that when I bent mine... What I did was snug things up and then use your fingers to line things up as best as possible. The flat does not get bent over this so when I bent my flats the receivers came out fine and the finished gun works great...

When you drilled them out, how much did you have top open the hole? Would it be easier to just remove the front alignment pin and measure from there?

I finally got to look at Jig #1 and it needs some repairs... These juigs are rugged byt after 10-people used the jig things are bent. The bottom plate will need some serious help as the two ends are bent upwards so that the center part of the bottom plate now does not remain flush to the jig. What this means is that the bottom of the flat I just bent required quite a bit of hammer work to get flat.
I will see if I can get a replacement plate... Until then there will just be the one jig out on rotation.
Another option I have is to put my 1st jig back out without the alignment pins... That jig has very little use on it but it would require people to measure their flat to center it in the jig...
I welcome any oppinions on the 2nd option.

Now, if you guys are willing to try to fix the jigs, I am more then willing to send you each one of the two jigs that need to get fixed. One of the two jigs is a much tougher fix as one of the two alignment pins are missing.
The second is this jig where the bottom plate is just bent.. Right now I squared the jig up and I have my 20-ton press holding the plate tight up against the bottom of the jig to see if the steel will go back. Honestly, I know it really won't help a lot but it was worth the try.
So anyways, I will send either or both of you the jigs if you think you have the time... as for steel, I can see what I have here at home or I will go shopping so I can send steel that matches what these bottom plates were made of originally. I will even pay you guys for your time plus you can test the jigs while you have them...
I have just been so busy at work lately that I really don't know when I will get the time to make a new bottom... It does seem that the weakest point on the DPH jigs is the bottom plate but better then the main jig body bending like the first round.
PM me if you guys are serious!
Ken

Quarterbore, I finished my turn with the jig.
When I originally received the jig I did not take it apart until I was ready to bend the flats. At that time I unbolted the bottom plate and found that both locating pins were loose from the bottom plate (before I started use). I found that the jig was still usable (I carefully bent all of mine), however I thought I would mention it so you can decide whether or not to keep passing it along to others to use or have it come back for repair. It really doesn't look like it would take much to fix, but I don't have a lot of time in the next few weeks to take care of it for you.
Thanks again for letting me rent this!

Thanks! The alignment pins are only there to center the flat so as long as they don't get lost the jig will be fine... I will send you the next address for d.hauser via PM now!
If you don't mind, can you include a note with the jig advising people to be careful about thse pins?
Thanks!

Sorry I did not BUT I did get to play with the jigs a little and I think I need to get some photos of the jig as there is something a little strange...
I dug out my original DPH jig and out of curiosity I stuck what I thought was the bent lower plate with the pins on Jig #1 and it looks pretty good. When I tightened up the screws it looks like that jig should work fine?
Next, I took the bottom plate that holds the flat to the jig from my #1 jig and tried that on jig #2... that jig has a pretty big arc on the surface where the plate gets attached...
I fail to see how anybody could have bent the jig body itself as that is a very serious piece of steel... I have been working late a lot and I really need to get some photos but right now it looks like the bottom plate on my original jig will work just fine. I plan to bend up another receiver and see if that works...
As for the 2nd jig, I have no idea what to think. It might be possible to chuck it up in a milling machine and mill the top flat but I just fail to see how this could have happened from use but I sure didn't notice it when it was first sent out.
I think I need a couple stiff drinks or some serious drugs as I am really perplexed by the two jigs but if I can get jig #1 back out I would be really happy as I doubt that jig was used to bend more then 10-flats before it had issues. I have done another 2 or 3 since without the alignment pins but still... 13 flats on a $130 jig isn't so great $/flat ratio.
Please give me until this weekend as on Saturday I will be able to bend up the receivers and get photos... I also do not have steel that is the correct size and I had tried my local hardware with no luck...
I appreciate the offer but you have to see what I am seeing OR I need someone to verify I am not going nuts somehow...?

If the center section is actually bent it may be garbage. You cant mill the base falt again because that would change the distance from the bottom of the receiver to the top rail bends. Send me some pics and I will tell you if I can fix it. As for steel, I planed on milling down what was needed anyway.

received jig on 3-30, everything looks ok, i will tig weld the locator pins back in if there is no problems with me doing that. i will also replace the washers that go under the caphead screws, they are pretty messed up.
i will let you know just before i am done with it, to get next persons address.
thanks again...........
ps.
did you get the drive screws yet ken?
Quarterbore
03-31-2006, 07:46 AM
I did get the drive screws... thanks! I also have no problems with you tacking the pins if you are sure but you have to be careful not to build up the material of the flat will not sit flush to the bottom plate and it will bend the bottom of the receivers out.
I think I would rather epoxy or a hi-strength loc-tite myself as these pins are only to center the flat... there is no requrement for strength there and the only worry would be that the pins get lost.
As for the other jig, I got hit hard at work with a short notice project and I have not had time to bend up a flat and test the other jig. I hope this weekend I can do it...
The jig body that looks like it is bent has about a 1/8-inch bow to it... I have not took photos yet as every night this week I got home well past dark.
I also got another pelican case so if my first DPH jig with the bottom plate from my second jig will work (I assume it will) I will be able to ship this jig out. I hope that I can get it out on Monday but I really don't want to ship until I am sure it is working correctly...

Quick update as we need to head out... I finally got some time to take photos and to bend up a flat. The lower plate with the alignment pins from the first jig works great with the body of the second jig...
I bent up my flat in under 20-minutes with taking a few photos to provide more detail on how I bend my upper rails. The final flat is as nice as any flat I have ever bent...
Everything is square, the bottom recess for the Mag catch looks great, the top rails are nice...
I also received the Pelican case for the jig and I need to cut some foam so the jig and extras have a home like I did for Jig #3 that some of you got to see.
I will have this jig out on Monday to mightyt11.
The other jig really is beyond hope I am afraid but I will fight with that more later.

Or not, delivery rescheduled..........
I want you guys to run that tracking number. Tell me you see something a little funny about the locations, and the sequence of arrival/departure. It seems to have departed from a location PRIOR to arrival at it...... And then it went back again...... and was delayed 2 days from the original delivery date.
I already had reason to suspect that the Neo-Double-Lightning-Bolts might be watching. This makes one of my eyebrows twitch.

LOL, are you saying that I am overly anal? How dare you! Actually I put a magnet mounted dial indicator to the base while I was pressing. I then too a OD of the jig before and after pressing.
I am sure it will work fine. I am just that crazy.
