I saw a little information of the 500 phantom with a 168gr .308 sabot. 3200 fps with 44gr of powder. That is the same velocity of a 300 Weatherby using half of the powder. That's 30% less recoil. Promising considering that one of the big reasons people don't like the 300 Weatherby is because of the recoil. Equally promising, I think one could cut the load to almost half and still get velocities around 2550 fps around a .308 with recoil between a .243 and a 30-30 (30% less than a .308.) Why isn't this a more popular cartridge for recoil sensitive shooters. Of course all of these numbers are very loose but the idea is there. I hate the idea of training youngsters to hunt with lower powered rifles (There is nothing wrong with shooting deer with a .243 Winchester, .250 savage, or .25-35 but shot placement is a necessity and if anyone should be shooting these cartridges it should be the more experienced not the less. A 30-06 is much more forgiving)

Sabots have to date proved to be fickle things when it comes to accuracy. I would rather put a 750 grain bullet at subsonic speed through the shoulder-heart-lung area.

Actually I think the NEF Handi-Rifle in 500 s&w with Cor-Bon 500 S&W Special 275 Grain Barnes could be a nice youth gun. Light recoil. Big holes.

Have seen one. Don't remember the loads, but I would not let a kid shoot it. You know it is there. These shells might be a whole lot different...

Using the recoil calculator on handloads.com... 500 S&W Special 275 gr at 1350fps using 32 gr of powder in a 7 pound rifle... Free recoil energy 11.28 ft/lbs. 243 Winchester 100gr at 3000fps using 45gr of powder in a 7 pound rifle... Free recoil energy 10.43 ft/lbs. For comparison a 308 ... 168gr at 2820fps using 46gr of powder in a 7 pound rifle... Free recoil energy 19.59. So Close to the recoil of a .243 but a lot more knock down.
