Considering adding 300 Whisper to product line.

We have been hearing a lot about 300 whisper. We currently have some sub-sonic cartridges and are considering adding to our line. We would like to hear from this forum about what your concerns are as well as your opinion on the availability of Whisper 300 rounds, both super and sub-sonic. Thanks for the feedback!

I for one would think its a great Idea, Having ammo around in subsonic vel. and a wider bullet weight would be something I would purchase....maybe even new Brass? Most of us reload that have this cal. but it would be great to purchase some ready mades for starting out with new rifles!! :uzi2:

I had talked to the guy that owns alabama ammo a while back in biloxi ms or mobile al at the gun show and he was interested in doing 300 whisper subs but he said the cost would be too high for resale but that was when reloading stuff was in short supply. Now if i ever see him again hopefully he reconciders since there is only one place i know of to buy pre made stuff and its a $1+ a round.

Peferred would be lc 223 brass and a 220-240 smk or mabye a 208 amax load, with match primers! Shouldnt be too had since i have seen 223 lc brass 1 fire for around $80-100 a k and new for not much more lateley.

Offer an affordable subsonic round for plinking and I would buy it.

WalMart sells it for about $80/250 rounds made by Remington. It's called 45 ACP Its a good round for plinking with similar ballistics to the 300 Whisper for a hundred yards and usable to maybe 200 yards. The 300 Whisper has under half the wind deflection, vertical stringing, and rate of energy loss. Both have "rainbow" trajectories.

I consider the 300 Whisper (and clones) to be a precision round designed for longer range, 400 yards or more. To achieve that the cartridges need to be matched to the firearm, not unlike benchrest ammo. There are too many combinations of barrel length, magazine length, bullet weights and barrel twist rates in common use for any one load to be useful in a large percentage of 300 whispers and clones for subsonic use.

If some cartridge company would team up with a specific rifle manufacturer and produce ammo which matches a dedicated subsonic AR-15 or bolt action with a well defined chamber, barrel length, and suppressor system (and not keep making changes) they'd have a seller in my opinion. I don't know of any place currently where you can buy subsonic ammo and an "off the shelf" rifle and expect it to shoot nearly as well as with tuned handloads.

The Whisper is a good seller for us. More competition is healthy for the niche. Drives the price down, keeps service quality high, and is the American way. Formed brass sales are also lucrative. We make .300 Whisper brass out of .223 brass for $75 per 1,000 pieces if the customer sends us .223 brass (but we need it unsized).

With the Whisper, there is a considerable learning curve and sometimes you have issues with your load before your gun is 100% functional so you don't know which is the culprit. Having a factory load that was readily available for running tests and having a basis for your own load development is awesome.

But I am not willing to pay $46 for a 20 round box CorBon so $1 a round (or less) would be about right for me in a pack of 20.

If the load worked fine and stayed subsonic (and cycled my action), I would likely buy a bunch if they weren't prohibitively expensive. The trick is finding a load that isn't temperature sensitive and works in the vast array of different chambers and barrel lengths out there.




I strongly disagree with the post about .45 being readily available subsonic due to the lack of suppressors that will stay hearing safe dry (I think there are 5 now). Subsonic is not of value to me if it is just as loud as a suppressed supersonic .308. The sonic crack at 400 yards disguises the direction the round came from on supersonic .308 and can be very very accurate.

I second the desire for more affordable subsonic ammo using SMK 220 & 240s. It's much easier to reload supersonic ammo so I'd be more likely to purchase subsonic.

I have an FS2000 I would like to convert to the whisper cartridge but there is one thing I need to check. The ejection system is a bit complicated on the FS2000 so if I could get some spent cartridges to cycle through the rifle then I can go to the next step. I have a barrel maker that will make me the barrel but they want to know I did my home work and I am sure others would if they knew it was possible as well. I would gladly pay someone for this or if you want to donate for the good of all that is cool as well just reply or send me an email.
