New Barrel Trouble

I recently got a new 10.5" 300 fireball barrel and no mater what the cases get stuck in the chamber and I have to resort to pushing them out with a cleaning rod.

I am using Redding dies and both mil and commercial brass with the same results. Each time I chamber a case the bolt closes but fails to extract the case. I have tried 4 different bolt carriers and each bolt has a new extractor spring and an 0 ring.

I tried polishing the chamber, shortening the sizing die by .050 but it has not helped.

However the cases and loaded rounds function fine in my other 300 (model 1).

Does anyone have any more ideas?

I have the same barrel. There are some brands of brass that are too thick for the M1S chambers, for me, it was FNM brass. I think the throats are a little short also, this will require seating the bullet deeper. Brass that is working for me is R.P., older L.C., Winchester, PSD.
I ran some Tubbs Final Finish through mine and it seemed to help with being able to extract unfired rounds.

Sorry for the confusion, the model 1 barrel is fine. I am having trouble with a barrel built by another manufacturer. I have tried 5 different brands of brass and the issue remains.

If you have Dykem (steel blue) Dykem the outside of the cases (magic marker will work in a pinch). Place the case in the chamber and let the bolt go. Extract the case, using a rod if you have to. Look for shiny spots on the case to tell were it is sticking.

What length are you trimming your cases too?

I'll try that later today. I have trimmed all the way down to 1.355" and the results are the same.

I had a similar issue and believe it or not, I was bumping back the shoulder too much and the extractor was not able to grab the rim.

The round would fire, the case would stay in the chamber, and I would have to knock it out with a cleaning rod.

I came to the conclusion that I could not use LC brass as no matter how much I resized, it would not drop in my case gauge.

This may not be your exact issue but keep it in mind.

You could of gotten a barrel that has a bad chamber cut. If the chamber is cut too deep - then your extractor wouldn't be able to grab the rim either. It wouldn't be the first time I received a bad 300 Whisper barrel. If the loads are working in your model 1 upper and not in this barrel ... then there has to be something funny up with this barrel.

Did you try the case coloring method? It could possibly be that the new barrel doesn't have as muh room in the neck and the brass is too thick and hanging up there. Have you tried talking to whoever made the barrel to check and see what they recomend or if they can tell you the dimensions of the barrel?

This was my thought. I've heard some barrels require neck turning if you are forming from .223 brass. I think this is because the original dimentions were obtained from opening the necks on .221 Fireball brass, which leaves very thin necks compared to necking down .223 brass.

Well I found out that my dies were not sizing the base of the case enough. I picked up a Redding small base body die and now I can chamber any type of brass I have tried including Winchester Commercial, Winchester Mil, Speer Mil and LC. Best $30 I have spent in a while.
