300 whisper suppressor

What would be the best suppressor for the 300 whisper? I've read that some people are using a 9mm can. Is it just as quiet as a 30 cal can? I will be shooting subs through it almost exclusively.

I would like to keep my barrel length at 16" and have a partial integral suppressor to keep the OAL as short as possible without getting the SBR stamp.

Just looking for recommendations.

I've read that the 9mm suppressors work quite well on subsonic 300 Whisper. I've also read that you can't shoot supersonics through them as the pressure is too high. I have no personal experience trying a 9mm suppressor on a Whisper though, I use a YHM .308 suppressor.

If you keep it sub, pressure won't bother it. Liberty is one company that will make you a reflex style to keep the length down. DeGroat Ar. makes a 12" that is excellent. It will add a lot of length. Ops Inc makes a reflex type that is rated up to the 300 UM.

It depends on what you want or need to do with it. I mainly hunt or plink, but the 762 is accurate on my bolt gun at long ranges. I have a YHM 762 and a YHM 9mm XL for carbines. I use the 762 on my AR 762x39, 16" barrel. It is heavy out at 16", but I can shoot super-sonic or sub-sonic. Mainly use it super-sonic now because I built a 300 Fireball 10 1/2" barrel threaded 1/2-28 so I can use the YHM 9mm XL. and sub-sonic only. It is very light to tote around it the woods. It does not spook the animals bad and I can get 3 or 4 kills out of a group of hogs, but, a couple of weeks ago using my AR 762x39 super-sonic, I got 2 hogs and 8 pigs. So it depends what you are using it for. I am lucky that I have both.

I'll be using it for deer hunting primarily. I would like to be able to use it with super-sonic rounds even though I won't be shooting much of those if any. I guess I want my cake and eat it to LOL

If I go ahead SBR it, how short can the barrel be, without interfering with the gas system and leaving enough barrel in front of the gas system to thread it for a suppressor? I think I'm gonna go with a 9mm pistol can. Lighter, smaller and If I want to shoot supersonic rounds I have plenty of other rifles for that.

It would be good if you cold hear them shoot. The 762 can is going to be quieter than a 9mm pistol can and a little quieter than a 9mm carbine can. There are silencer shoots around that you could go to. I don't mind demo mine because I like to shoot anyway if you are anywhere near me.

What is a reflex style suppressor? I've never heard that term.

As for barrel length, mine is a 10.5" and it cycles well and is a handy length with my YHM 7.62 suppressor attached. I think you can go shorter but my suppressor, according to YHM, should only be used on 10" and longer barrels for what that's worth.

I contacted the Major and he suggested for my money the YHM Phantom QD would suit me. "Best bang for the buck"

I have a YHM Phantom QD and like it. There are some that are lighter and some that are a little more quiet. The Brian at Major Malfunction is right, the YHM is hard to beat for overall value. I've talked to him at the Tulsa gun show and he knows his stuff.

YHM makes a great rifle can for the $$....Ive shot my brothers YHM against my Thundertrap and with sub loads its a toss up...Thundertrap cost over 1K

I have a yhm phantom and a AA762SD.. I like the AA762SD hands down, granted the only drawback is that you have to buy the qd adapters separate, but it is a much better can than YHM. The only positive about YHM is the bang for the buck... but what is an extra 100 or 200 bucks when it is something that you will more than likely keep for the rest of your life. I have 3 yhm suppressors total and wish i didnt have all that value now that i have experienced other brands. When you compare the phantom with a 1200 suppressor i can see where yhm would shine, but put 150 more to the yhm and you will get a better sounding and nicer system.. your call. YHM is good for the value and their suppressors are decent, but definitely not the best or worth it in the long run. Go to silencerresearch.com and spend the money to join before you blow a wad on a suppressor.. you will be glad you did.

I was going to post something about the YHM versus 762SD but decided to hold my thoughts. Now that you've brought it out, I have to say that I agree 100%. The only difference is that I never purchased a YHM....I was fortunate enough to be able to see the differences before I actually spent my money, and it was a no-brainer then.

On the 9mm vs. .308 suppressor, you can shoot supersonic in a .308 suppressor but it will probably weigh twice as much as a 9mm suppressor.

I have a SWR O300, but havent got my Form 4 back on my Trident. What difference will I see when switching to the Trident (Other than less weight and length).

Well you will have to have a adapter if you dont have one already
"trident is 1/2x28tpi or metric, 300 is 5/8x24tpi", about the same with subs, a little more action noise but not much. Less blowback since the bore diameter of the can is larger. You cant shoot supersonics through the trident, i use my 300 can always now since i keep my trident 9 on my m9 or on my 7" 9mm upper.

I have an 300 Whisper Encore and have tried both the 762 SD and the Degroat can on it. The 762 SD is quiet and seems to have a deeper tone. The Degroat can didn't work well intially -- it was loud and caused keyholing and large POI shift. James Degroat was good enough to exam it and the Encore barrel. We both attributed it to a poor thread job on the barrel. James was good enough to replace the end cap on his can with a new one that better fit the out of spec threads on barrel. It sounds great now. While the ACC sounds very good on the encore, it is heavy and you'll have to install a muzzle break or flash hider. The Degroat can is lighter and the length doesn't bother me at all. I think it is a great option if you want a dedicated can for your Whisper.

The adapter to change it from 1/2 x 28 to 5/8 x 24 is $75 MSRP I think.

Since I already had a Trident, I purchased the adapter only. I use it on my marlin 357 lever action (loaded with 158gr subsonic loads).

I purchased a Coastal MIMMS 9mm can on my Whisper and this high volume can works great. Plus with the various thread adaptors that can be purchased seperate, it can be used for other platforms such as a 9mm AR upper, UZI, etc.
