I have a remington 700 300 whisper with a can that i have for a few yrs and its been great but now i am wanting to build a upper for my rock river. I have just ordered a barrel from Noveske and now what to know what to buy for a upper and bolt set up. there are so many to choose i am a but overwhelmed. I mostly shoot subsonic loads and want decent stuff, i dont need the most expensive but dont mind to pay for quality.
thanks for the info

Well if you are going to build a new upper i would suggest buying a new uper reciver also. You can get them for around 125 and it would make your build alot easier in my opinion. Also you can sell your old upper/bbl for 300 or so bucks :D
You will need the following tools if you go the route of buying a new upper reciver.
vise and barrel blocks "not really needed but helps tremendously", punch to remove/reinstall the gas tube/block pins, small hammer "brass or steel" ,wrench to install the barrel nut.
If you go the route of using your old upper reciver you will need a ar15 barrel wrench and defintly and vise and barrel blocks. If i am not mistaken most rock river and bush master uppers are a pain in the rear to get the barrel nut off to remove the old barrel.
If you go to ar15.com or even brownells.com you can get instructions or i belive even watch a video of how to build a upper for free.
Actually I am building a new 300/221 noveske upper now for my sbr'd lower. Its kinda funny since my barrel should be here in the next hour or so:D
My parts list are as follows if interested.
POF billett lower
noveske 10.5 300/221 bbl
rra bolt/carrier
yhm spectre ff tube
yhm bipod adapter
yhm buis sights
burris scope base
not sure yet on upper reciver or scope yet so we will see what i can get cheap ! :nanabang:

You will need a m4 cut upper for your build with a noveke bbl. it uses a basic bolt and carrier, you can just buy a new bolt since you already have a carrier and just switch them out. i usually set headspace with a case trimmed to the correct oal, you can get and use go nogo gagues tho. i suggest these parts as this is what i am build ing and all can be had from brownells
274-000-019 DSA A3 UPPER REC W/M4 FEED RAMPS brownells
you will need to get a forward assist and dust cover assembley unless you dont want a dust cover. dpms offers a kit through brownells for their a2 upper which will work for around 50 bux. it comes with the rear sight assy also but you wont need it and can sell it or keep it if you have a a2 upper already, also comes with a charging handle :D

i am goning to use a yhm handguard/ff tube and you can get them for around 125 or so. that is the cheapest m4 upper i have found fyi. oh and you will pefer a rifle leagth ff tube if shooting off a bipod. yhm makes a adapter for that too

New upper recievers with M4 feedramps are available at BravoCompany for $96.
http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/Upper-Receiver-assembly-M4-Flat-Top-p/flat%20top%20-upper%20-m4%202.htm
New bolts and carriers are also available from the above company. Shopping around helps. I've found BCM prices to be better than Brownells on some items, and Brownells better on others.

If you can use .223 brass for .300 Whisper does that mean you use a standard AR-15 .223 bolt?

Yes - that's one of the nice things about this caliber. You can use all standard AR15/M16 parts except the barrel.
