Looking into builing a 300w, but am not sure which way to go, I plan on shooting subsonic.
I can't decide to go with an AR upper or build on a savage 223 that I have. I know some of you have built on a savage action, have you had problems feeding or extracting? I have a FP10 in 223 with blind box mag.

of course I love the ar's, but not sure I want to play around with getting it to cycle etc.
the barrel length on either of the guns will need to be at least 16" 's .

Since you already have a Savage in 223 then a 300 Whisper barrel should be a drop in with no changes to the rifle. If you're only shooting subsonic anything over 16" will only hurt accuracy. 10" is plenty other than for legal reasons If you haven't shot a 300 whisper realize that without a suppressor a 300 Whisper is not quiet. Although the bullet is subsonic the propellant gas exiting the muzzle is not. It's about as loud as 380 pistol and hearing protection is still needed. A legal suppressor will cost as much as the rifle in the US.

Mine is built on a 10FP. I ordered a Shilen barrel through Northlander on the Savage Forums. Here's what I ordered:

Shilen Stainless select match, standard finish, 18”, small shank, 1 in 8 twist, threaded 1/2x28
Thread length: ¾” (Shilen charges $75 for threading)
$344 + 14 shipping

I have no problems with extraction. I usually just put my hand over the bolt and pick up the brass by hand anyways though. Sometimes it will not feed properly, and it has something to do with how I load them in the internal mag. If I carefully load them and make sure they are all straight, I can shoot 6 times without any problems. I have no experience with a 300W AR, but I can tell you that I am very happy with my bolt action. Still waiting on the suppressor to be built though.

Thanks, I am planning on getting a suppressor. Currently I am checking on a trust, then will decide which can to get. Though I am leaning towards a DeGroat 300 Whisper. Thanks again.

If you plan to go the bolt action route, sell the Savage and pick up a HOWA 1500. Feeding /extraction/ejection is 100% reliable. Even more reliable than the Whisper I had built on a CZ/Mauser action. The Savage and Remington rifles can be reliable. Some of it is hard work. Some of it is luck-of-the-draw IMHO. Spook put me onto the HOWA's. I had one built and it has been 100 % reliable. EGW even makes a 20 moa picatinny scope base for them.

Sorry, off topic. But does anyone know of an NFA dealer in southeastern Ohio?
I am working on a trust now and am going to need a dealer.
