What am /I doing wrong? Trimming 223 to make 300 whisper brass

I'm using a drill press and a Forster power case trimmer

The problem....the cases start to vibrate or start to pop off the Forster case trimmer. Is my drill press going too fast? too slow? Should I use an end mill?

Are you using the pilot? I use this method to make literally thousands of 300-221 Fireball brass. I use two different methods.

Method 1: 223 brass cut directly to length. For this set-up I use the .224 pilot to keep things lined up. The proper alignment is important with this method. Also make sure that the brass is tightly clamped in the holder.

Method 2: Expand 223 brass to 30 cal and then cut to length using the .30 pilot.

The use of the pilot will make sure the axis of the cutter and the axis of the brass are not lined up. In both methods I turn the cutter at about 1700 rpm.

I did not use a pilot! They are on order from Midway due in a few days. For some reason I thought they would be optional.:confused:

When you are using a drill press you have to use a pilot. There is just too much slop in a standard drill press quill.

All set! Night and day with and without a pilot. I set the press for 1700rpm and used a pilot. No more problems! Thanks for the help and offer of a pilot!
