If ever you've dreamed of having an expanding bullet for use in Whisper sub loads, it's time to sound off. Berry's bullets has begun to look at the possibility of making such a creature for us. This is an established company with the ability to make this happen. They are looking for feedback from you on this project. Let 'em hear what you have to say. Respond here or in the following thread started by the folks from Berry's http://www.quarterbore.net/forums/showthread.php?t=3086.

What kind of accuracy are you getting with these puppies? Are they expanding on game as they turn sideways? Do they exit the animal? Details man! Details!

9.9 grs of VV N110 gets me 1075 fps out of a 16" SSK AR. Groups are 1.25" @ 100 yds. I have caught bullets in wet newsprint, but not in a deer. I have shot two deer and both bullets did the same thing. They went in, turned sideways, and exited. The exit hole is sideways. It is also shorter and more blunt than the full size bullet. The bullet expands in everything I shoot it in so I have no doubt it's expanding. I'm going to be hunting the rest of the week with the 458 version of this bullet. If I pop a deer with the SOCOM, I will put a Whisper bullet length ways so I can catch the bullet.

I dropped a note to the folks that made the bullets as shown on the Corbin site ... no response yet. Finally found your source as you listed it on the thread you posted ... will contact them. (They certainly aren't inexpensive ... actually slightly more than 500 gr Woodleigh Weldcore softs for the .458. Ouch!)

Old post, but I'm digging it up. I just talked to Corbin and to setup for this round from scratch is pricey. About $2000.00 for tools and material for an initial 1000 bullets. The cost per bullet is $0.32 verses $0.42 for 240berger though and this is the shizzle for killen!
You can see my calcs in a spreadsheet I made here:

Getting ready to test some 220's from Diamondback Bullets for the 300. So far they are looking good. Live targets next. Will post pictures and results soon. He has been working real hard to make a product that will expand and hold together.

Don't see why it wouldn't. His website is confusing, so the best way is to email him. Below is his response when I did so.
The .300 Whisper works very nicely with a round nose, hollow point bullet having a rebated boattail to reduce base drag. You can maximize the weight with the rounded nose, and the front end opens up better if it is blunt, while at subsonic speed, the ogive shape has far less effect on drop than the base design...like a car body, the biggest drag is from the turbulence left in the wake until the car gets up to 1050 feet per second at which point it generates a big shock wave that far overwhelms the base effect. Fortunately we have no supersonic cars other than driven by teenagers.
There is a good discussion of subsonic 300 bullets on www.Corbins.com/subsonic.htm
The problem with the pointy Sierras is that they were never designed for subsonic use, and are simply being sold that way as an expedient. On game, they are not nearly as effective as a rounded nose. They will have a somewhat flatter trajectory but the performance is not nearly as good on impact. The deep hollow cavity of the round nose subsonic design, with serrated jacket and a ball placed over an air cavity or a cavity filled with inert grease like swage lube, insures far better performance.
But to make the pointy Sierra, all you need is a normal 4-die set (RBTO-4-S). You can nudge it along toward the better performance end of the scale by using a SDD-1-S serrate/draw die to put little lines in the jacket to guide the expansion. You can also seat the core with a hollow point punch, which doesn't cost anything extra (we just substitute the HP core seat punch for the regular OT or open tip punch). The main issue will still be pushing all that copper down into a small impact area, where it resists expansion.
Here are the two packages, one for the Sierra match bullet as used for subsonic guns, and the other for the additional or changed items to make an actual subsonic design:
CSP-1 S-press........... $598
RBTO-4-S .308 6-S ogive rebated boattail open tip set... $906
J-30-125 bullet jackets, pk/250... $38
LW-10 lead wire, 70,000 gr, $39
PCS-1 core cutter .247 diam, $69.50
CSL-2 swage lube... $8
The above makes the Sierra style bullet but with the rebated boattail design.
To change this to the subsonic bullet, change the RBTO-4-S set to:
RBTO-4-S .308 1-E ogive HP rebated boattail open tip set... $906
And add these enhancements:
SDD-1-S 308 serrate/draw die... 259
PUNCH-SS Saber Tooth 308 CS internal punch... $120
BB-3/16 pk/1000 bullet balls for the tip... $30

And then you can stay in your garage making thousands to sell to Board members!!!
But seriously, 180 grain bullets like the Nosler BT and Hornady SST do expand at subsonic velocities - not dramatically but enough to kill with one shot.
The point of the 240s is to dump a lot of energy in a long for caliber bullet that should be unstable after a few inches in a heavier than air medium. The combination of factors should contribute to a one shot kill through blood loss (more like an arrow than a high velocity bullet).
Larger game I have shot with the 240s tend to get hit, look around, continue to feed, lie down or fall down straight away and bleed copiously.
I am happy with either of those two results.

So let me get this straight. He dosen't sell bullets, he sells the equipment to modify them?
The reason I asked about AR feeding is I was jamming Hornady 220 RN into my M4 feed ramps.

Corbin sells the equipment to make the bullets from scratch. You buy dies, presses, copper tubing, lead wire, tungsten etc and make your own bullets. I'm sure you could modify others but the whole point of bullet making is putting together stuff that you can't buy. Is $2K a lot of cash just to make a few different types of subsonic bullets? Sure it is but you can also make all sorts of other bullets for anything. Once you've got the base equipment you can get dies for all sorts of designs and sizes. You can mix and match flat base, boattail, rebated boattail along with pointy bullets or round nose etc. The only limits are your ideas. For some this is not the way to go but for others who love the creative possibilities its a good way to spend hobby money just like others might on bass boats or RC planes etc. What does your hobby cost?
Hope that clarifies the Corbin angle a bit more. Its not really obvious from the posts unless you know who the maker is and what they sell.

I shoot the 208 AMAXs. I've shoot them through 3in of dried hickory and recovered them from the dirt. If you could find a way to replace the red tip, they could probably be reloaded.

Where can you purchase these bullets? Do you still use H110 powder, which primers, (CCI SR primers) ? HOw many fps? Still subsonic?

I buy my 208 AMAX's from Midway.
I load them with 8.0 grains of 2400 with a Federal 205 primer and get 1020fps from a 10.5" Noveske barrel.

I've only shot them to about 50 yards so far but at that range I get 1/2" groups. I'm more than happy with that and it is similar to what I was getting with 240SMK's, which are far more expensive.
The other nice thing is that I plan to use 208 A-Max's in the 300 Win Mag Remington 700 I just picked up so I can just buy one bullet for both.
I actually just bought some of the 225 grain Outlaw State expanding bullets for the Whisper but I haven't had much time to tinker with them yet. Most of my tinker time has been with a 7.62x40 rifle I built recently after I got lucky and found one of the barrel/die sets on the EE at arfcom.
Too many projects and not enough time...
