View Full Version : Thinking about hosting build parties... looking for interest

Before I commit I need to make it clear that I have been swamped with work and I have three kids and way too many bad habits that have provided me with very little free time.... Just the same, I have a workshop full of tools needed to build AKs and I am thinking of hosting a build party sometime this spring.

Tools I have include the flat bending press, rivet press, barrel press, 12-ton H-Press, and most if ot all of the small tools that would be needed.

I am looking for interest at this time... I may also ask for a little money to help cover my cost in tools but given that I have about $1K or so in tools I think that $20/day per person and we will aim for small groups of no more then 6 per party will allow us to get them done fairly quick.

I live in SE PA just outside Philli PA (ZIP 19460).

I am not really ready to go as my garage is packed with tools that will need to be moved to a storage unit to allow us room to work... If there is enough interest I may get a jump on things....

ALSO... PLEASE NOTE, I do not have an FFL! I can NOT build an AK for you! You are paying for the rent of my tools and space. I will be glad to help and I will likely do one during the party as well....

I'd be in.

I'm in Alexandria, VA. but come up to PA pretty regularly to visit my folks in Boyertown.

:D

Boyertown is real close... say about 30-minutes or less...

As you can see, I am renting out the flat jig (see other sticky post) until I get some time to get a work area ready for a group build... I also want to get my own first rivet build done from a flat so that I know what I am doing before get a party going....

I will insert our group builds into the rotation for the flat jig as soon as we set a time and we have about 6-guys (or gals :P as gfs or wives are welcome). My garrage just isn't all that large with all the tools and a 67 mustang taking up space...

Tell me about that drive... I was stupid and bought three MGs, a Bridgeport mill, Atlas Lathe, and a 500-lb Pantograph mill on your side of my state and did so on different occasions... That is WAY TOO LONG OF A DRIVE... trust me, I know!

the problem with fal building right now is that NO ONE has receivers. it sucks. i have a kit ready to go right now, but cant get a receiver thats worth using ( a DCI coonan or am IMBEL). there are others out there, but they are junk. coonans are the ebst to use, but there is like a 3-4 month backorder. they are preferred because they are us made, and thus counts toward compliance. mike

Makes me glad I got the two DSA receivers I did last year on the Group buy at FALFiles!

As for a build party at my house... it may be real tough with my schedule... Three kids (7, 5, 1) and with kids soccer and a garrage that needs way too much work to allow us to build makes it tough... Hell, I have not been able to get down to the basement to test the flat jigs out and send them back out and I was going to do that this afternoon...

I do have all the tools however and they are portable... I have everything for the FAL plus I am onlt really short the spot welded for doing AKs... I will have to see but darned time has been short lately...

Glad to see a couple YEAs however so we will see what we can do... perhaps I will just quite my job so I have more time for my habbits (I mean hobbies).

mikedddd, Does FAC have any?

quarterbore, my garage was just cleaned for a garage sale. I have room, but only a drill press. I'm 12th in line for a DPH jig. Would love to have the gang over.

I spent some time working on the second 555th Jig tonight and bent a flat... I had to redrill the holes as they were all kinds of messed up (burs, not square, etc). I also took a ton of pics but I can't get them uploaded tonight...

I want to bend another flat tomorrow night if I can with the origibal jig for a comparison but I don't see a reason it should have a problem... Then I will have two jigs circulating... Also, fwiw, I do know where a third jig can be got on short notice if a build part was to sneak up on us and I couldn't get one of mine back in time...

im in the process of buying my 1st home, and its small with a small basement. have not yet moved (about a month away) but plan on building a small workshop down there for sure. i just got a yugo undefolder, and i'am waiting for someone to produce the receivers for it. but im down for a build party. i can bring whatever tools i have as well (fal stuff, dremel, drills, ect). also i have another email bussy from hazleton who wants to do a build as well. so theres at least 3-4 people interested. im down with where ever as long as my schedule can comply.
to answer your question, as far as i know, at this time NOBODY seems to have fal receivers right now. yes it sucks. apparently there is like a month long party (seriously) in brazil or something, and during that time no one works or something. at least thats what the lady at DEALERS WAREHOUSE said on the phone. they said they would have in stock receivers a few weeks ago and im still waiting. FAC according to the falfiles website, has NONE in stock by anyone since 3-8-05. supposedly they will have coonan us made ones for shelf inventory sometime in june. WHY i dont know, but coonan decided to do a custom run on receivers with custom #'s, engravings, ect whatever. its TAKING way to long, and pissing off everyone else on the list waiting. but then again, hes the only one in town for us made receivers so i guess ill have to wait as well. but anyways

im in for a build party. please email me at mdellato@rcn.com to set something up. i will travel. just let me know- mike

I think my AK Flat bending jig just shipped along with a barrell press jig. Ordered Riveting jigs but no idea when they'll arrive.

Getting close to the build party. I have atleast 3 others interested.

We'll need Spot welder with proper lower tong. 12 ton shop press with 1" diam ram and riveting jigs if my don't arrive soon.

Other small stuff I think as well.

Let me know

Quarterbore

looking at the 3rd or 4th Saturday in August. I'd lean more towards Sat Aug 27th, cause it will give more time to clean the garage and basement.

Hope you can attend.
