View Full Version : Is it possible to rechamber 223 for 300 whisper ?
I know very little about chambering barrels so excuse the ignorance.
I have a friend who has piles of brand new take off remington 223 barrels. I suspect they are all from 700s and that means they are 'probably' 1:9 twist.
Is it possible to make a 300 whisper barrel from this ? Is it a bad idea because of the faster twist ?
What is the range of bullets likely to stabilize from 1:9 ?
Thanks!

it may be difficult getting a .308 diameter bullet down a .224 bore, and by the time you used enough powder to do it....I doubt you'd use "whisper" to describe the sound.
Oh yea, I totally (effin) forgot that! :)
Funny reply. I can't say I can remember what I was even thinking!

the chamber might be a little off too since the 300 is shorter. That would at least leave a short "throat" to get the .30 cal bullet started down that .224 bore. ....

Isn't "NO" sufficient?

Actually, I found Spook's comment to be quite funny and helpful.
I remember what I was thinking by the way, my machinist has 308 barrels. The idea was to cut the chamber off a heavy barrel and re start it as a whisper. He rechambers this way now and then and said no problem.

It is possible, but you would have to get a gunsmith that would rebore the barrel to .30 cal, cut the threads off, rechamber, and rethread. Basically you would spend more then if you bought the proper barrel in the first place. I have a rebored 1916 Newton. It was a 256 Newton and was turned into a 30.06 before I received it.(Damn Shame) In this case it was rebored and recambered because the 06 case is larger and slightly larger diameter then the 256 case.

Yes,
but then you get an error message saying your entry was too short.
Alleycat is correct but the only barrel maker (Spencer somebody) I've found that would do it wanted as much to rebore ,re-ream ,re-rifle as a new tube. Penny at PacNor has the guys number if anyone wants to get in touch with him.
