Far too slow.
You need to think about pistol powders - for their speed and bulk in the case.

I tried some Varget early on along with some lil'gun and benchmark. As noted they are a little slow though it worked fair in the 16" barrel with 150gr bullets. Consistancy wasn't very good. In the short barrel velocity varied considerably and we fired only a few rounds. The faster powders work better and our attempts were to bracket a range of burn rates for experimentation both in bolt actions and in semi's. Varget was at the outside edge of the range.

So what powders would you recomend for 180 to 240 grain subs in a 16" ar-15?

http://www.quarterbore.com/300whisper/subsonic.html should provide you with a starting point.
Start low and work up in 0.1 or 0.2 increments. Remember that 50 yard accuracy does not foretell 100 yard results.
