I'm looking to see if the following setup would work well on Florida hogs - they get around 100-150 pounds at max.

AR-15, .300-221 upper, with 8" barrel, 1:8 twist - would be firing supersonic rounds - open to any suggestions for bullet type and weight.

I like the idea of the shorter barrel for weight, ease of use in brush, and most of the shots will be under 150 yards.

What say you?

I have a 9.5" barrel AR-15 upper.

With 110vmax, I got 2200fps
with 125 I got 2100fps
with 150 I got 2000 fps

The Nosler 125 BT are popular in that role. The Vmax are probably too light, they expand to the size of a nickel and about as thick.

The 150s like the Nosler CT or Hornady SST should fit your role. There are also bonded bullets in 150 Grain class from Nosler and Hornady.

Barnes does make a 150 grain bullet for 30-30 with a big hollow point. Have to see if they feed well from an auto. Also they make a 130Tipped TSX which looks good on paper. And brand new for '09 is a 110 grain TSX. I have not seen one, not sure it you can push it fast enough to open the small hollow point.
