View Full Version : Looking to buy a .300 whisper Bolt action: Who can do it for me?

I'd like to use a Rem 700 action just so I can swap out parts with my other bolt actions just in case something breaks.

This rifle will almost exclusively fire subsonic 240 SMKs. So I'm guessing I'd like to have a 1:8 twist 16" barrel, (mabye a 1:7.5 so I have the option to fire heavier bullets if I can find them?)

Needs to be threaded 5/8x24 at the muzzle, an internal magazine, and a hogue "overmolded" stock http://www.hoguestore.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=569_3_14&products_id=171

Nothing fancy - I just want a dependable, weatherproof, quiet rifle.

I was thinking about buying a .223 Rem 700 with the hogue stock for about $600, then having it rebarreled by pac-nor, but the more I think about it - I wonder if I can't get it for cheaper when it's all said and done built from scratch from a smith here. Instead of just wasting a good .223 barrel.

So what do you all think?
Any smiths that you can recommend?

Here's the most important part: I'm impatient. And I only have a few months left in the states.
So who can do it in a reasonable timeframe? (Weeks not months)

Thanks!

ETA: I mean .300 Fireball, I have a ton of .223 brass and I'd like to use the instead.

I bought mine from Kelly Kyle at Kyle Armament in Oklahoma. You can look up his number on the AAC website. Here is a picture of his guns. He does nice work.

I bought on of Kyle Armaments rifles at the Tulsa Gun Show at first of month. He was great to talk to and his gun shoots great. Definately worth a look.

I have 2 from Kyle but would also say talk to spook as he is currently building a rifle for me. Always good to have options. Both guys have been a pleasure to deal with.

You might consider a Pac-Nor "prefit" barrel If you send them a sample cartridge with the bullet seated to your desired depth (no powder or primer) they'll throat it properly. Pac-Nor offers the 300 Whisper chamber and they will thread and contour their barrels to your specs. They'll fit and headspace their barrel to your action if you wish. They offer a variety of fast twist barrels in many calibers.

I went that route for my subsonic Rem 700. It's 458x2" not 300 Whisper.
