Hi all,

Long time lurker and 1st time poster.

My question is very simple. I have an opportunity to get a 300/221 barrel for my bolt gun for dirt cheap so I am want to jump on it.

Facts:

I will have a suppressor on it more often than not.
Barrel will be 18" and threaded 5/8x24(common 308 thread pitch)
I want to be able to shoot everything from 147gr to 240SMK's.

The barrel is 1/8 twist. I know that will stabilize the bullets from 190-240gr, will it stabilize the 147gr bullets so I can use the suppressor with it? I have read that 1/8 is the way to go and good all around is this accurate?

I don't totally understand twist rates as noone can give a clear answer anywhere so...

'Faster twist' is 1/8 twist and a slower twist is 1/12 twist right?

Thanks in advance. Have to give him an answer tonite so thanks for the replies in advance!

1 in 8 = one complete rotation every 8 inches. Faster RPMs = more stability for longer bullets. 1 in 12 = one complete rotation every 12 inches.
I have a 1 in 8 on my AR and it averages 3/4" at 100 yds with subsonic 240 and supersonic 125s. A faster twist will stabilize the shorter bullets sometimes to the point of over stabalization and bullet failure, but the Whisper is simply not capable of generating enough velocity to do this.

If you don't buy it, set me up with whoever has it. I need another one!

Everything I've learned about the 300-221 / 300 Whisper says the 1:8 is the best twist for general use. 1:10 will rob you of the longer subs like the 220s and 240s.

Jump yesterday.

Took awhile to respond but I jumped at it.

Here are the specs.....
SS Lothar Walther barrel
18" long 1-8 twist
Threaded 5/8x24

I think my SWR Omega will reside on it, or maybe the AAC Cyclone, haven't decided yet.

Won't even post the price, don't want you all to hate me!

Shouldn't regret that then = I have shot sub MOA groups with all bullet weights now from 125 thru 250 in my 1/8. Takes some work though.

I am currently in love with the 185 Lapuas - they shot clover leafs at 100 and hit like stink.
