Going to have an upper custom built. I can get a barrel blank and wonder:

1 - Stainless steel or Chrome Moly?

2 - Twist (mostly going to be subsonic, with occasional supersonic) - 1:8 sound good?

3 - Any good, accurate makers of barrel blanks for this caliber?

4 - Best overall barrel length, again mostly for subsonic, up to 300 yards?

1 - Stainless (personal preference)
2 - 1 : 8
3 - Contact a member who goes by "Spook" He has some ready to ship.
4 - Unless you want to register a SBL, 16" is pretty much the standard for an AR subsonic machine. If you were interested in shooting supers and were concerned with reaching a certian velocity, then the answer would certianly be different.

Well, I do have an SBR registered lower - what length barrel would you recommend then for mostly 300 yard and under subsonic shooting? Is there a point of diminishing returns, or a point where going past would hurt most other loadings?

+1 for contacting Spook. He is the man with the answers. I have a build going with him right now.

I like CM myself because it is a bit harder than SS. It does require that you do clean it though. Although SS is not immune to corrosion. It really comes down to if you like shiny or parked.

1:8 twist is the only way to fly.

16" is already past the point of diminishing returns for a lot of loads. But if you want to do supers as well, it will give you a few more fps. Also, if you put a can on the end, a longer barrel is easier to suppress. Cycling is more reliable with longer barrels.

My only real problem with SBRs is the regulations about taking them across state lines. The NFA has got to go!

I've got a Douglas 1:8 Premium that should be on its way to me this week. As far as the rest goes, I supplied an A3 upper, vented float tube, and bolt for head spacing that were sourced from DPMS. I don't have the tools to install a barrel myself. Someday.

Paladin Machine did the work. The owner reads this board but I don't know his nick here. He made my custom 223 upper, so the fact I'm going back for the 30/221 says something.

9.5" is working well for me.

Earlier this month I had spoken with a couple of fellows that have freinds that work for Olympic Arms. They told me that Oly will be making another batch of their barrels in 300 Fireball with gas port in pistol position.

From Oly Arms home page:
300 Fireball barrels/uppers: Currently not in production. We have no idea when the next production run for the 300 Fireball barrels will take place. 6-12 months is a reasonable estimate.

I'll second Spook, I got a barrel from him and the transaction went very smoothly. Incidentally my barrel has one of tp555's adjustable gas blocks. I haven't installed the barrel yet as I'm still trying to trim down the gas tube and need to get my hands on a freefloat handguard that will fit over the gas block.

Get a handguard thats larger than 1 3/4 id.It makes your life easier. The 1 3/4 will work, but its close. You will also have to cut a hole to access the pin if you don't have opennings in the handguard.
