I just got my M1S whisper yesterday. They shipped a box of parts to me because I had the port drilled in the pistol position (0.0625"), wanted a FL free float tube to cover the gas block and they didn't have an under tube gas block. I put a PRI adjustable block on it and put it together last night.

We are under a level 3 snow advisory with about 10" of snow on the ground now and its still coming. I really hope to get to the range on saturday and make it go bang. Really hoping not to make it go BOOM!

I have some 150gr FMJ BT's loaded with W296. 13.5 14.5 15.5 16gr's OAL loaded to 2.250". Brass is trimmed to 1.355" and the neck thickness is 0.012" or less.

If I drop the bolt from mag lock (chrome Youngs NM), it goes home just fine. I can't "walk" the bolt home and have it fully close. I colored the neck, shoulder and bullet with a marker and don't see any signs of rifling or chamber contact. I also have about 25 loaded with 2400 to "break in" the barrel. If I can get out on Saturday, I let you know how it goes.

It is NOT made to do this. ALL semi auto guns are built to have the bolt fall from the FULL open position. This is how they work when you fire a round. The are NOT ment to be "walked home" or assisted, or slowed.

Well I got to pull the trigger today:smile:. Loading one round in the chamber with no mag in place, gas block screw all the way in, I found that the block does not actually shut all the gas off. It caused a "stove pipe". I then opened the block 3 full turns and had my first full ejection:smile:. Then I put two in a mag and had FTE's. I opened the adjustable block a total of 6 turns with no better luck:frown:.

Off with the FF tube, off with the gas block. The gas port started life at 0.0625". I pulled out a #45 bit, 0.082" and enlarged the port. Put it all back together and it now runs two with no problem:nanabang:.

I've not tried loading an entire mag and seeing what the additional pressure on the bolt is going to do. I also have no idea what is going to happen when I try to shoot subs. For the time being, I am happy with the outcome. I was shooting 14gr of 2400 under a Hornady 150gr FMJ BT (#3037B), 223 brass and CCI primers.

I have some 240gr SMK's ordered, but don't plan on loading subs until my can is in hand.

Jim,

The 0.082" gas port in the pistol position is what I use also. My rifles will run 147 gr up to 240 gr subsonic and super sonic loads without an adjustable gas port.

Good Luck and have fun

Just this Friday, DPMS came through with my A3 upper and diamond coat bolt / carrier assemblies. They didn't send me the gas tube though.

Fortunately my barrel maker has a gas tube in stock. All I have to do is replace it. In the meantime, he's going to be seeing about getting the 1:8 twist blank. I could have my whisper upper complete in just a few weeks.

I still need to get a scope and pick out a suppressor and get the paperwork started on that.

I decided to go with the same scope that I'm using on the .223 Rem upper because I like it. I'm also a bit of a gadget freak and once you have a scope with built in laser range finder it is tough to go back.

If only it also had an illuminated reticle like the cool Leupold scopes that cost over twice as much.

Yeah, Leupold is better. But Burris ain't bad.

Shot all my loads today to check for any pressure signs. None found shooting between 13.5 - 16 grains of 296. I'll load some hotter ones and see how it likes them. Gun functioned flawlessly. Shooting with the gas port opened 1.5 turns. Loaded one mag with the 13 remaining rounds, not one feed issue. I'm pretty happy at this point. NONE of the loads impressed me accuracy wise. I'll start with looking for some M1S loads and go from there. Thanks to all the posters here and Quarterbore in general. Without this resource, I would have never gotten into the whisper.
