Dillon 1050????

Has anybody used a dillon 1050 for loading whisper? Are there any tricks?

Also has anybody got a 1050 making whisper brass?

Do you use a CH trim die or a Cut down Dillon 308 trim die? Right now I'm using a Dillon 308 die because CH told me it would be 5 months to get a die from them. With the Dillon die I don't have enough clearance between the lock nut for the trimmer and the tool head to suck chips out. I was wondering if you have the same problem or what you solution was.

I do not use my 1050 or 550 for whisper. My trimming and loading are done on a Lee Classic. I did not have good luck with consistancy loading whisper on either of my progessives.

I got my 308 trim die back to day I had the machinest trim .60 off of it. when setting up the 1050 do you size with a .223 die or go straight to the trimmer and then to a whisper size die?

I use a 550 for 223. I can only assume that the issues are powder charges. Loading 180 subs, I use 8.4 gr of 2400. The control for subsonic velocities is so much tighter when dealing with pistol powder charges. 0.1 grain variances with a 8.4 gr load is equal to ~1.2%. When dealing with a normal load 25.5 gr for a 223, the same 0.1gr variance only nets a ~0.4% change. Just a guess. I load all my subs one at a time.

mooster1223 was on the money with his guess. The only way I found to keep each load as consistant as I like was to weigh each charge individually. Since I am doing that it is just easier to work the loads on a single stage press (for me anyhow) If you are shooting a semi it may not matter as much as it does from a bolt- but I dont shoot semi. Heck, I went thru almost 3k rounds last year- I think I would have to load on one of my progressives if shooting a semi :)

So are you guys making your cases or having someone make them for you?

I've made them one at a time running a .223 case into a file trim die and cutting the top off with a hacksaw and then filing it smooth and then running them in a size die. Once you fire the case it is then properly formed. I have since tried a few other methods but now I want to try and do it on a dillon 1050.

I have a jig I made for my chop saw to aid in cutting 223 brass off at the shoulder. I can cut about 800 an hour easily. I then finish the brass with a dillon rapid trimmer set up in my Lee classic press. I would not trim on my 1050 because of the mess trimming makes- IMO-way too much of a hassle taking it apart to clean every time.

after watching that you-tube video I got all excited thinking their might be a faster way to make brass. I bought a mini chop saw from wilton industrial and chopped about 20k cases down and then ran through the size die and then I use a Guirad trimmer to bring them to lenght and debur the method works pretty good but I'm always trying to find a faster way. I figured if i could get the dillon set up i could run them through that to trim and size and then i just have to deburr them on the Guirad trimmer.
