Hello Quarterbore,
I've been reading up on 300-221 (.300 Whisper) on the site. Thanks for all the great information! I am putting together my first AR pistol and am starting on case and load development while waiting for all the parts for the build.

Has anyone tried or seen data using Enforcer powder by Ramshot for 300-221 subsonic loads with 220 to 240 gr bullets? I will contact Ramshot as well, but just thought I would check here too.

I will be starting with a 16" barrel with a YHM 7.62 phantom (gas opperation either in car or pistol position). I currently shoot 7mm-08 subsonics out of my 15" Encore pistol using 162 grain bullets and trailboss (extremely quiet). I took two doe this year with that set up, but would like to shoot a heavier bullet with the availability of faster follow up shots (I understand the AR will be louder with the cycle action and gas bleed).

I don't think there is enough volume in the 300-221 case to use trailboss (anyone try it?). I have a few pounds of Enforcer for my .44 mag, but since I started shooting suppressed loads the revolver has been spending alot of time on the shelf.

If I can't find data on Enforcer I will just go with a known "safe" load for now and pick up whatever powder is reported to provide the best results and seems most available (I don't like taking the time to develop a load and then have a hard time locating more powder). It sounds like it can be difficult at first to just get the AR to cycle consistently (without trying to experiement with new loads at the same time).

Looking forward to any information you can share,

Thanks,
J

I imagine that if you can find load data for a .357 for it, should be a fairly close starting point.

I have not used enforcer but it does appear to be a fair choice. I ran it thru QL and a load of 7.2 would be a great start.

As for trail boss- it's burn rate is far to fast to use so dont.

I know it is not a direct answer to your question but out of all I have read get some 1680 and dont worry about anything else. If you have other powders or want to play go for it. I bought 3 new LB's of powder to try with the whisper. I now I have 2 lbs of powder I dont think I will be using anytime soon. I should have just gone with the 1680.

Thank you to all for the information.

DKSD39,
When you referenced QL and got 7.2, was there a specific bullet weight you used?

Thanks,
J

7.2 should work with both 220 and 240- its only +/- 10 fps between the two

Enforcer is very similar to AA#9. And,according to Western Powder,is the same as AA#4100:smile:

That's good to know, because I can't find ANY Ramshot in my area. Ramshot and VihtaVuori were recommended as being extremely clean burning powders, but I can't find either one! I hope I don't have problems finding Accurate #9 or #4100!!!

My Summer has officially started and I finally have time to report back with results using Enforcer by Ramshot with the .300 whisper AR in a 16" carbine and YHM 7.62 Phantom suppressor. I am still working on refining the loads and haven't done long range accuracy testing.

For all loads I used a Remington 7 1/2 benchrest primer with .223 Federal brass formed and cut to 1.36.

220 Sierra Round Nose OAL 2.06 Rem
8.8 grains cycles at 875 fps
9.0 grains cycles and locks bolt open at 950 fps
9.4 averages 1025

220 Sierra SMK OAL 2.155
9.2 cycles at 1064
9.4 cycles at 1100 still no bolt open

220 Sierra SMK OAL 1.769 LOADED BACKWARDS
7.8 doesn't cycle at 1025
Last cartridge in clip will not load reliably.

I hope to have loads developed by the end of summer and will plan to report back then.
