Well after having a Douglas blank with an 8" twist in the rafters for at least 3 years, finally made a 300/221 barrel for an AR.
Plans are to keep loads subsonic. The bbl is 16.1" long and I moved the port back 2" from the normal carbine location, port size is .106.
She functioned fine yesterday with 9.3 gr/4227 and 190 SMK's which are the heaviest bullets I have right now. Hope to pick up some 220's and AA1680 plus either AA9 or H110 as well. Brass is Rem 221 which am forming with Redding dies.

Any how I'll be lurking around here quite a bit as I get this new toy figured out!

Yup sounds good. From what I've been able to find surfing the net, seems 3 powders are always mentioned AA1680, AA9 and H110.

Formed up 100 cases from 223 brass last night and based on measurements should be ok for neck clearance. Thats a big help as I have 7 five gallon buckets of the stuff from many years of NRA high power shooting. Most only once or twice fired.

Think I'll p/u some 1680 and 220's this weekend and hit the range Monday.:smile:

I have also used 4227( 9.3gr I beleive), but the last time I chrono some rounds my 1680 got the 1010-1060fps but my 4227 got 700fps???? anyway sometime next week I will work/check my loads and see if it was a fluke or what, but I liked the way 1680 loaded a lot smoother, the 4227 was like pencil lead and just did not run as smooth in the uniflow

Hey that leads me to a question. The only measure I have is a Redding Universal Benchrest model. It simply doesn't meter that small of a charge well.
What are you guys using for these tiny charges?

It is on the high end for powder dumps.......Not trying to be a salesman for Harrell's but they are fast and accurate, two words that don't usually go together.....the subs seem to be very charge critical to keep the vertical stringing to a minimum....if I'm going to load 8 or 10 rounds to test I just use the scale....if loading for a normal range day of 200 or 300 rounds I use the Harrell and don't have to worry about repeatability, saves a lot of time....the last regional F class match I went to I would guess that over 75% of the competitors there were using Harrell's dumps, including the winner :smile:

If you don't mind the cost N110 has been very good with the subsonic 220 load in terms of ES and SD. Functioning is another story.

Does moving the Gas port back increase the amount of gas to better cycle SUB rounds in the AR?

Moving the port back definitely helps function with subsonic loads.
Basicaly the oposite of what you want when going to a longer barrel. On 26" and longer I move the gas port forward 2" from the normal rifle location.
You can really feel a difference with the long barrels.
