My apologies. I would edit the topic title but that option does not seem to be taking affect. I changed it but it still shows up as 'Test'
I built this pistol (soon to be an SBR):

I used this barrel:

I prefer my AR's simple. I don't see that I have any need for railed forends or gadgets hanging on them. Not opposed, they are just not needed for me.
What I would like to do is build a matching upper for this gun in .300 Fireball. I would like to use the same front site(not pinned, uses set screws), CAR handguards and flat top upper.
My questions.
1) Will a pistol length gas block fit under stock CAR handguards?
2) Will the On/Off gas block I have seen posted (made by tp555) fit under stock CAR handguards. I don't mind cutting/grinding the guards to make it fit and have access to the button.
3) Can I do all of the above with the same contour on the barrel as Denny's 11 1/2" VCQB.
My plan is to only shoot subsonics through this upper while using the YHM Phantom that is patiently waiting for me to pick it up.

I don't think you'll have clearance even using M4 handguards without the shields. Just grab a YHM lightweight handguard and you will be set. If you just have to have the traditional look, SSK will make you a barrel and adjustible gas block that will fit underneath. The downside is you are stuck with Whisper from .221 brass and more $$ than buying a YHM handguard and TP555 block. If you only shoot subs you could port your barrel on the fat side and fit a Vltor block underneath. If you ever shot supers in it though you will never find your brass. I'm a Utah gunner too. Good luck with the project.

Thanks jarhead,
I am just about to go look at the YHM site. My dealer received my 7.62 Phantom and I need to look at the mount for it.
I did get my stamp yesterday for the SBR so that pistol needs a new upper!

jarhead,
Did you mean one of the two piece replacement handguards from YHM or one of the free floats?

You could get one of the adjustable gas tubes:
http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=396319&t=11082005
(There's also a guy on ar15.com - not me - with one for sale @ $45 delivered)
I've used one for several years and it's worked well for me.
The valve is held on by a roll pin. Pop the pin and install it on a pistol length gas tube such that it lines up with one of the holes in your upper handguard. Any low profile gas block should work - YHM has a little one for $20. This way you can keep your KISS look and retain the adjustable gas feature without going full custom.

abyssdncr,
That looks like the perfect solution. Inexpensive too.
I am a bit unclear how it attaches to the gas tube and controls gas flow. It can't be that hard to figure out but I can't find any good pics online.

OK, I found the advert on AR15.com
That led me here: http://www.fulton-armory.com/AGT.htm
Much better pictures but I am not sure about fitting the 'valve' to a pistol tube. It looks like setting up the roll pin and hole for the 'valve' would be critical and difficult for home tools.
Can a carbine tube be shortened to pistol length? (I think I'll ask this question on AR15.com also)

I'll see if I can get some pics for you. Attaching the valve to the tube is pretty straight forward. I'm waiting for my new pistol gas tube right now to do the install myself.
The valve will be oriented on the new tube and drilled through with a 1/16" bit and then pinned. Once in place, the screw is removed and the tube drilled with a 1/8" bit. Put the screw back in and you're good to go.
I had my carbine set up with this adjustable tube in a mid-length and dissy style with a Colt .625 front sight base reamed to fit the carbine barrel profile and tapped for set screws for mounting the handguards.
EDIT: Oh yeah, just went through the excercise of shortening a carbine tube for the pistol location. It's definitely possible, but after giving it the good ol' college try, I ordered a new pistol tube from M1S ($17 shipped). I couldn't get the bends in the tube where I was happy with the alignment with the carrier key...
SNLing right now with JB, but I'll get you some pics tomorrow...

Ok here's a pic of the gas tube, the valve, and how the holes go. The adjustable part is installed like it's blocking the gas flow. I think it's pretty self explanatory, but maybe I can take the time to do a pictorial install when the new tube gets here.
Hope this helps:

Hope this helps:
Very helpful! Thanks!
Does the adjustment screw have and kind of a tip on it? Or is it just a tapered end?
Pretty much looks like what I need for what I am planning to build.
Does anyone sell just the valve? Or must you buy a rifle or carbine tube just to get the valve?

The screw has a non-standard "tit" on it. I'll get another pic for you. But it is certainly a "tit" tip that obscures about 2/3 of the gas flow.
Unfortunately, I haven't found anyone selling just the valve...because at $30 for a valve, let's face it, nobody'd buy it!
Nonetheless, it worked pretty good for me, so I'm going to give it another go and install it on the pistol tube.
Speaking of which, my pistol tube arrived today from Model 1. Unfortunately, it's a half inch longer than what I'm currently running... :(

abyssdncr,
I posted a question on AR15.com about this and was pointed toward this gas block:
http://www.jprifles.com/buy.php?item=JPGS-5
It looks like it would fit under CAR handguards. I bookmarked the tube your using and this block.
We sold our house today so packing/moving will hold up this project.
EDIT: No need for another pic. I suspected that the screw had a 'tit' on it but wasn't sure.

That looks perfect. I didn't realize that JP had low profile blocks out now...
Good luck with the move!!! Did that 6 months ago and don't plan on repeating it any time soon...still can't find all my reloading crap!
