After reading the Chevron thread and seeing some great pics of this particular M9 I was wondering what would be the top 5 M9 Bayonets to collect; whether they be Buck, Phrobis, Buck/Phrobis, Lancay or whatever. My pick would be (1) the 'crazy' 3-line Phrobis with the Chevron; (2) the General Cutlery M9 made for LANCAY; (3) the 'last ditch' M9 with Buck on one side and the 3-line 'crazy' 9 Phrobis brand on the other; (4) the Buck 'riveted pommel' M9 prototype made for the USMC; and (5) the military issue 'crazy' 9 3-line military issue Phrobis. I think the small font 4-line military issue would be a runner up. Unfortunately I have only #5 above and in poor condition at that.

I am pretty sure you listed the toughest USGI M9s to find.

The Crazy 9 is on EBAY all the time as is the various other 4-line knives but the knives you list as 1 - 4 are certainly a challange to find.

Here's what I think:
1) Phrobis XM9 Trials bayonet
2) Buck solid tang USMC (riveted pommel or threaded tang)
3) LanCay solid tang (Army or USMC)
4) Phrobis Chevron
5) LanCay shallow fuller (the issue piece from the early 1990s)

There are other pieces that were made in lesser quantities, but I think these are the most desireable.

Well, I have numbers 1, 2, and 4...I would have had number 5 on ebay if someone hadn't have contacted the seller by email and made an offer to them and then they stopped the auction. I have lost too many auctions that way. I do have 2 General Cutlery LANCAYs and a few semi rare ones.

Hey Rex,

Do you have a complete XM9 or the blade blank?

I have the knife... I do not have the scabbard or the pommel, or pommel screw.. Right now I have a pommel and screw off of another phrobis knife on it...I know the original ones have a machined m7 pommel...

Well, in the top of mine "most wanted" list there is actually a bayonet that I never saw on ebay for sale.
It is a commercial variant made by Phrobis during the desert storm war, with a tan handle and (if I remember correctly), a tan scabbard (old style-not M9A1), but black magazine pouch and black webbing top strap.
I'm not referring to the tan M9A1, which I already have, nor to the commemorative desert storm M9A1 (the one with the nation names on the blade).
I saw a picture of this particular bayonet in the Homer Brett's book, but I don't have any reference, here at work, and I can't remember the markings on the blade.
I don't know how how rare it is.
Bill?

Hi Carlo,

I know exactly the bayonet you are talking about. They were made in 1990/91 time period and sold through US Cavalry. There was only one small lot of them made. The plastic components are tan and the back strap and hanger are black webbing. The pouch on the front of the scabbard is tan, not black; however I do have one that came with a black pouch. My thought is that they originally planned on a tan pouch but ran out and used black, but that is just supposition. The blades are marked M9A1 but it is obviously not the M9A1 configuration.

Bill,
THANK YOU for your answer!
You wrote that this small lot was sold "through US Cavalry"...did you mean that Phrobis sold this (commercial) bayonet to the military, only?
In other words, was it a kind of commemorative bayonet available only to Desert Storm veterans, who were allowed to privately procure it through an Army "shop"?

US Cavalry is a retail establishment and is not in any way affiliated with the US Army. My understanding is that US Cavalry had Phrobis make these bayonets specifically for them. They then sold them through their catalog. Anyone could buy them. They were strictly a commercial item but they were not a commemorative.

Ooohhhh, now is clear ... I thought that this US Cavalry was a kind of US Army shop, for soldiers only....:o

There was a seller on Ebay at one time that did have the tan phrobis m9 knife with the black webbing and pouch forsale...I think it sold for less than 200.00 at the time...

I had a series of communications with this individual two years ago. he wrote offering me a large sum of money for a particular bayonet that I had featured in a different thread. It was an offer I would have been foolish to disregard. After many frustrating emails I finally told him that I was not interested in dealing with him and not to try any further contact. He makes a very high offer to get you interested then starts making all types of demands. The kicker was he wanted me to ship a four-figure bayonet to him in mainland China and he wouldn't send payment until after he verified that the bayonet I sent him was genuine. Yeah, like that's going to happen. I spoke to a collector in Hong Kong and he thinks he knows who this person is. Has a reputation for ripping off trusting foreigners. It is illegal for Chinese citizens to receive these bayonets so he tells the sellers that the package must have been confiscated by the government. Long and short of it, you don't have the bayonet and he doesn't send you the money. My best advise to you, stay away from this guy.

For the old order of things once again apologize。But likes and purchases this xm9 bayonet, I am have the sincerity very much. You must know that this is not my mistake, all are the Chinese government mistakes. Therefore I had thought many means that requested you transport the bayonet to Hong Kong or Macao, this is legitimate. If you credibility and good, and I can give you first payment。In fact, I have a lot of M9, from the United States are purchased through a variety of channels,Also from ebay tool can be any mail door to Hong Kong or Macao. We are all lovers of M9, please stop worrying more.
