I can't find out much about the TNTs performance on anything larger than varmints. I've seen it mentioned here for yotes and rabbits. I'm interested in it for 100-150 lb blacktail deer in rainy, heavy woods. Tracking is a pain so I need to drop them right now. I know that the TNT will break-up, that's a plus as long as it penetrates 12" or so for behind the shoulder shots.

From the 12" penetration request you might have guessed that will be used for SD as well. From a 7.62x39 Mini-30 with a .308 bore.

I think the 125 BT would work but I'd like to hear about the 125 TNT as well.

Thanks

125gr Speer TNT work fine at 300-221 fireball velocities. At 300-221 fireball velocities, their terminal ballistics is like 130 gr bullets from a 30-30

If you go back and read through the previous posts on this board you will find several discussions/treads on this and various related subjects.

125 gr @2200-2300 fps -- deer and hogs?
150 gr @1800-2000 fps-- deer and hogs
165/168 @1700-1900 fps-- large deer and large hogs
175/200 @1400-1800 fps- large deer and large hogs

Go for it.

I've searched and read threads for "TNT" and "Speer" but I didn't find anything specific about the how the TNT bullet reacts at these velocities. I have a hunch that it might be a bit more explosive than the Sierra 125 and Nosler 125 info that I did find here.

Your are right. There are no direct comments on the TNT performance on game. But they should work like a charm on deer at 300-221 velocities. I would not hesitate using them. I shoot them in 3-gun matches and they are very accurate. I can consistently get 0.6 to 0.7 inch 5 shot groups at 100 yards.

What is the desired twist for stabilizing the 125's for 2000-2500 fps range ?

is 8 cool or 10 better ?

I've had good luck with the 125 TNT's at 2500 fps out of a 1:11 twist
