I am thinking of purchasing some brass off of gunbroker "lake city 223/300 non fire formed ready to load" has anyone bought any from him? Seems reasonable at .50 ea and he trims to my chamber spec also. He used 308plinkervt username on Ebay when he was selling there. Hopefully its good stuff since I only have a few cases of 300 fireball at my disposal.
Thanks for the info.

When I get my tumbler back from my brother I'll start doing some cases. What trim length are people looking for?

I recently got a couple thousand from Dave Davis now that he is up and running again. I waited almost a year while he was getting blown up by IED's, retiring, and moving etc. They look great but I haven't fired any yet. I also received my Dillon trimmer die this week from C&H Tool and Die so I can start making them in volume myself. Dave gave me some pointers and lessons learned, he's a great guy.

jarhead,
I also received my Dillion form and trim die from C&H this week. What press are you planning on using. A friend and I tried to set is up on a 1050, but the toolhead seems a bit too thick so the cutting will collect in the tread.
So can you share any of the pointers, advice, etc.. that you got from Dave or have discovered on your own would be greatly appreciated.

I just found this out tonight and was glad to see your post having the same problem. Neither my rock chucker, ammomaster, or my Dillon 550 will work because they require the same engagement. The 7/8"-14 thread on the trim die was made a 1/2" too short. If it was made longer though and engaged properly you would eclipse the chip removal holes which have to be at the top of the case. I think the solution to avoid making a new die and still allow chip removal would be to make a special shell holder adapter. The adapter would be a copy of the press ram on top to hold the shell holder and a copy of the shell holder button on the bottom to engage the press ram. The whole thing would stand off an additional .450 - .500" to push the case higher up and still allow chip removal. My shell holder would need the OD turned down about .010-.020" to clear the female 7/8 thread on the press. If I drew up the part I wonder if C-H would machine them? They wouldn't require heat treat and would program easily. Dave Davis made his own die and uses a Dillon trimmer too. I will call him about this problem and share what he says. Do you see any other simpler solutions? I wouldn't want a single piece because shell holder lips wear out and it would be easier to replace just the shell holder.

I have a RCBS RockChucker now. I am thinking about getting a Dillon super 1050 or 650. Anyway, I think that RCBS makes an extended shell holder.

I did a google search on "rcbs extended shell holder" and found several sources. So yes indeed you can get and extended shell holder for the RCBS press. Here are some links:

They seem to be pretty inexpensive

Thanks for the tip on the extender 320PF. I usually do things the hard way. I ordered the extra long extended RCBS version from Midway just in case the regular extended was still too short. As far as cutters for the Dillon trimmer goes, Mr. Davis told me that Snap-on sells them for cheap. The part number is BTK 10A. I haven't checked this number out at Snap-on yet, but wanted everyone to know since Whisper will wear them out a little faster. He also told me that you'll have to use some feel when you are trimming before the sizer grabs ahold of the case. I want buckets of Whisper. After killing two buffalo quietly in my friend's back yard with only 9 grains of powder and watching rabbits detonate with supersonic 125 TNT's I just can't say enough about this round and its versatility and efficiency.

Jrhead1086,
Thanks for the heads up on the Snap-on cutter replacements for the Dillon trimmer. It looks like the extended shell holder will fix the problem of the cutting build-up in the RockChucker. How about getting the Dillion trimmer to work on a 1050? I saw a video on the web of the 1050 making 300 FIreball brass. The set-up was very slick. It used the automatic case feeder and made a case with every crank on the press. With that set-up I would guess that you could make about 800-1000 rounds per hour. And I agree with you.... I want about 3-5k cases of 300 Fireball brass before I feel comfortable.
Do you have any pictures of the buffalo and rabbits that you took with the 300 Fireball? I would like you to post them here on quarterbore and write up your hunt here and on www.ar15.com under the "varients" thread. It would give the 6.8SPC fanboys/KoolAid drinkers a fit.

I do have pictures of both, but I haven't tried posting a picture yet. It wasn't a hunt on the buffalo, we just walked up to the fence and shot as the butchers pulled in the driveway. The birds are working on the heads right now. I'll recover the bullets when they are done and they are less stinky. The 6.8 guys have lost interchangeability of parts and magazines, the cartridge dosen't shine in the short barrels, and you're stuck with oddball brass and bullets. To top it off they can never be Hollywood quiet.

As I mentioned on another thread that was asking if he was still around, I sent him an email a few weeks ago and he got right back to me within a day or two. Good luck.

my whisper will be here next week and I thought I would be getting brass from Davis, come to find out that his is out of the picture. I have lots of 223 LC brass, but after $$$$ for the whisper and dies powder etc, I don't have the mega bucks to buy corbon or SSK ammo, for startup brass. Is anyone else making brass?I think I am going to several hundred but a hundred or so to start would be great?

I was in the same situation earlier this year. I decided to just make my own. It really is not that hard to do. You can use a small pipe cutter to cut the 223brass just behind the shoulder and then form and trim to length. After a little practice, it went pretty fast. You could easily do a couple hundred in day. I did rig up my rcbs case trimmer to use a cordless drill. That made it much easier.

Are you talking about the "quick grips"? I think I got those at Lowes. The mod to trimmer is just a screw with the head cut off.
