new build. Having feed problems with my Donor Receiver. Receiver Rem. 700 SA, VS model and was .223 cal.
Anybody have a similar situation or know of a fix ?
Do I have to remodel the Follower to Feed or other Fix ?
(IMHO) It's clear that the new Big Diameter of the bullet from .22 to .30 is the culprit and causing binding of the Round as the tip of the bullet tries to chamber.
Extractions and fired brass is GTG.

Same problem on mine too. Using a savage action. Looking for a fix on the follower.

Modifying the Follower or finding a differant Follower but Have one idea. That is to go with Detach. Mag. system. There is a aftermarket Detachable. Mag. system that takes Ruger mini-14/.223 mags. For SA Rem. 700 and maybe other Actions.
I can Not remember the name of the system or the Manufacture though. (BUT I have seen it advertised)
(Is Not) the Badger AICS system. I have that already on a .308 build.
It would be a step-Down forsure from the Badger AISC system but is also cheeper in price also. If 30-221 adaptation is compatible like AR-Mags in feeding. I think it might be a GO.
I will try to trackdown the name this week and check into it.

When I do a Savage barrel I very slightly dish the rear of the barrel to direct the bullet toward the chamber....seems to work as mine feeds pretty reliably even with Hornady RN 220's

Slight dish on the end of the barrel will probably be my only option because I used a single shot action.

I got a small feed-ramp dish on Rem. 700 SA Receiver already and I might pollish it up also. With a little paist and my Dremel.
OK I went seeking out advise. I talked to an Oldtimer who has done a ShitLoad of wildcatting and he told me you Can Achieve a Lot just by the Spring under the Follower. And the force of 'directional push', It is giving the Follower. While conected to the BM lid.
I went home earlier today and started bending and shaping the spring in the opposite direction of it's 'Tempered Memory Curve'.
In my Rem. SA the spring was curved in a forward direction pushing the follower to sit really nose-down when you are just holding it in your hand. Free of the Receiver.
I bent ( NOT Back and Forth) but steady bend to make The Spring/Follower to sit in a natural 'Strait Up and Down' to the Bottom-Metal door that it is connected.
Low and Behold, I got better feeding results with getting rid of the forward spring curve.
Also the I had to do a little File/surfacing work to 'Underside' of the leading edge of the Follower. By changing the Follower position. It was not acting smoothly with the Feed-Ramp of the Chamber and was catching. You could see and hear it as you were working the Bolt, in and out without a round.
I had to put a Nice Radius on the 'underside Edge' of the Follower ' the Smaller end that is pointing to Chamber.
Now I get (Not 100%) but close to it. In Feeding from the Mag Box. and Not binding as it is going up the feed-ramp and into the Chamber. ..
The Factory BM Follower Spring. (I am pretty sure ?) Does have a Tempered Memory to it. I think (not sure ?) of it. But It might work its way back to the Curved Position. I might have to continually work it. A few more times to give it a new Memory on shape.
I also have a small Kiln and could Heat the Follower-Spring and then oil cool it to change memory but That is not my Trade and am a little unsure of the proper temp. and if it should be a Water Quench or OiL after the kiln heat ?.
If Anyone that can Chime-In here with this metal temper Info would be appreciated.
....thanks

I talked with JD Jones several months ago about building a .300 Whisper on a bolt action. I had been planning to use a M-700 action but he told me that just about any other brand short action was better than the 700. It seems the length of the action from the front of the magazine to the bolt in battery (ie.- how much travel 1)the feed of the round and 2)the extraction of the fired shorter .221 case combined with the ejector design of the M-700 causes problems which take a lot of work to correct.

I have a Rem 700 in 300/221 and I have no problems with extraction or the ejector. I think this is because my Remington started out life as a .223
- as such, it uses a .223 bolt face .... I use nothing but reformed .223 brass, so I have no problems.

Neither JD nor I were referring to the bolt face size as being the problem, he indicated that a combination of factors in the M-700 design has proven to be problematic. I am glad you did not have any problems, I'm sure many 700 conversions have little or no problems, however, I will still respect the experience JD Jones has accumulated over far more conversions than I ever will.

Did you ever find the link for the mini 14 mag conversion for the 700 action?

I just put together a Rem SA in 300W out of curiousity... couldnt get the spent cases to stay on the bolt past the breech end of the barrel without falling off? Seems to be purely question of length.
I got so angry I cut the bolt off and used a Savage bolt head in its place....Same scenario
Called PTG and they have a reamer for a 30 X 223  which is very close in capacity to the old 308 x 1.5 (Barnes) or .302 Whisper (SSK) .
The problem here may be OAL.... and dies, but in concept its sounding good if the mag box will take the length of the 30 cal boolets seated near the NS junction. May take going to the 7.62 X 39... I'll let y'all know when i figure it out.
