I will receive my donor action here shortly either by weeks end or early next week.

I have opted to rent the reamer as a call to my favorite reamer maker netted 8 to 10 weeks for deliver. This is just to long of a time frame so I will rent it.

The 300 Whisper is of course a SSK propitiatory item therefore only they will have exact 300 Whisper dimensions. The reamer in question is actually called a 300/221 fireball and will work with the Redding Dies that also read 300/221 fireball.

Do you have any tips before I embark on the chambering? The barrel has already been contoured and lacks chambering and threading.

Just wondered if there were any tips, tricks or secrets I should know about before finishing the chore.

Its a Pacnor 1:8 twist and a rem 700 action. The reamer comes with no freebore only a throat. How will SMK style bullets seat with only a throat or do I need to add freebore to it with my throating reamer?

Up next a 338 Whisper in a 1:10 twist or should it be a faster twist?

Well if you have a desire to use the magazine to feed rounds from you should have the throat be cut so with SMK bullets seated to overall length they should only have a .010" or less jump to the leade You'll need to make up some dummy rounds to test this.

Up next a 338 Whisper in a 1:10 twist or should it be a faster twist?
sorry no experience with 338

Daveoscok,
I can't offer much advice- I just recently got interested in this cartridge. I am building on the AR-15 platform.
But do keep us appraised of your build. I have a friend that is much interested in converting a bolt gun to this round.

Good to see you on the site.

I am also doing an AR15 for my buddy. I already cut the threads and fitted the barrel extension and bolt head play .003 and torqued it down. Contoured the barrel and cut the crown, threaded the muzzle and are going to drill the gas hole .0625.

Gonna make the gas block .750 barrel is .7495 and hes putting an adjustable gas tube on it. After the barrel block section it jumps up to .9125 for 8 inches or so. Its 17.5 inches long.

Yep Ill get some pics on here sometime in the near future.

Thanks for the help. I have a Stoney Point OAL gage that ill use to set the bullet length for magazine length and then throat until dummy rounds fits snuggly after cutting the chamber to proper headspace gage dimensions.

Did you cut down your Stoney Point threaded rod?
My "threaded guide tube" sticks up soooo far into the case that I cannot get a bullet in it.
Please advise.

I don't have the threaded rod not sure what you're talking about though?

The Stoney point one i have is threaded for about a 1/4 inch then has a shoulder to which a small 1/8 rod is squezed onto a "u" channel section of aluminum which runs through the center of the tube and has a brass nob to which you tighten down on the aluminum section once your bullet encounters the rifling.

Do you have a picture of this rod youre referring to?

To update the thread it should have read "About to build a 300 Whisper" must have been thinking about a 338 Whisper at the time of typing.

The reamer will be here Tuesday the 17th with a go gage. Got it from MidwayUSA. Should be a breeze as the bore is 308 and the reamer is what .375 or very close to it for max diameter. 33 1/2 thou on each side is very little for a reamer to remove.

Ohh I can now make rifles as I worked a deal out with a local FFL holder who happens to have lathes, and mills. If youre located in Georgia or even if youre not I can build guns now.

Got the rifle done. Loaded up some rounds and havent made it to the range yet. Stock is being worked for the 1.25 barrel channel to fit. It was a rem 223 sps action.

Is the 223 follower compatible with the 221 case or should I go looking for the follower used for the 221?

I purchased a Barska 10-40 50 30 mm tube with the mildot reticle. Cheap arse scope but with hardly no recoil or shock it should work ok. Didnt want to spend a buttload of money on something that might not even be accurate.

What are you guys getting from 100 to 300 yards in accuracy? Are you hunting with yours in suppressed mode (I know thats illegal but I also know someones done it because its just to much fun)? If so what was the response of the game if more than one animal?

I built mine to hunt hogs and kill multiple hogs before they become wise to the fact that not only do the mosquitoes bite but they now also kill lol.

Looking forward to accuracy tests with it.
