It's all coming together real quick. so I got a few questions to make it all go a little smoother for me.
some info:, My First Post here on the QB. ... . and This will not be the first rifle I have ever built and I am very proficient with .22 rimfire match.also proficient in Hand loading and load development ( but ) this is my first subsonic .30 -.221

Also: This 30-221 is going to be worked (Subsonic Only) and I am going with Boltaction for working platform.

OK this is what I got as of now:
Reamer and go-gage / 30-221
Glass / Leu. mk-4 with TMR ret.
SupCan / .30 cal.

On Monday (2 days) I am going to go with a CZ bolt action .223 cal. for a working platform.
Also going to order up a .30 barrel blank, 8/1 Twist. 6 land
Have not decided what stock to go with yet but it will be on a tactical style. hopefully the budget will allowed a McM or something as nice.

Ok questions:
1.- On the Cut, chamber/Throat. is there any reason I should Not, make it a little longer to give a little jump before the lands ?

2.- With my Reamer is The CZ Receiver in .223 , is it GTG ? . or should I consider it in a .221 for it's Bolt-Face ?

3. - Mag. box on the CZ action. Is there anything I need to modify or consider to keep my handloads to work in Mag. Box OAL of the .223 CZ ?

4.- My reamer is, .30-.221 fireball. So I understand this is 'Not' the same as the traditional ssk 'Whisper' in 300-221 ?.
also: Am I correct in my reading here on the QuarterBore forums that I can use .223 brass ? . in my sizing.

5.- ANYTHING I am 'Forgetting or possibly Screwing-Up Big-Time on ??? - or suggestions from experience.

thanks ..... ray

Hi Ray...welcome to quarterbore

The CZ in .223 works great for a 300 conversion....I have three. one dedicated to super-sonic and two for sub-sonic....

which version of the CZ are you looking at purchasing.....the synthetic varmint has a HS precision stock that works great.... not sure what features you are looking for in a stock but I have a McMillian A2 on a Rem 700 and as far as fit and finish the HS that comes with the CZ is pretty nice...it's a little short on the length of pull for me shooting from the bench but behind it prone on a bi-pod it's a good fit....

everybody seems to have different luck with "jump" to the lands....I have had the best luck with no jump or .003 or .004 pushed into the lands....

as far as I know the CZ in .223 and .221 have the same bolt face....

the .223 CZ mags have a rib down each side of the mag, kinda like an AR mag but not as deep....I mill about 1.5" out of each rib to aid in loading 220 matchkings....the inside mag length is right at 2.340"....with 220 matchkings most of my loads hit the lands at 2.235 OAL....

if you have a micrometer measure the neck portion of your reamer (roll it to get an accurate measurement).....the reamers that I have used .223 brass with good luck have a neck diameter right at .333

the suppressed CZ that I set up has a Leupold mark IV 4.5x14x50 TMR with Warne 30mm medium height CZ mounts....there is only .003" (measured with shim stock) clearance between the scope objective and the barrel, pretty close....

good luck with the build and keep us posted...

for the CZ. My machinist is a factory CZ dealer so I am just going to have him grab a Receiver, TG and Bm and true it up.
Or. I might have to look into what his cost is going to be and maybe get (like you suggest) the Synthetic .223 model. Could be cheaper in the long run just to get the total package and just tear it down to build. I will have him check it out tomorrow for his cost..

Hey ???? hows the trigger groups in those CZ's ??? am I going to have to get an aftermarket TG to make it a decent pull weight with a crisp break and no creep/over-travel ?.

As far as Jump into the lands. I am a little torn on which way to go. When I was working with .308 and trailboss for sub-loads. I felt it shoot better with a little jump. I really want a sub-MOA shooter for a Lead lobbing.
I was thinking on getting a long length .30 barrel blank and just cut it down to make two barrels @ 16". So I guess if one is not working out in accuracy I can always chamber the other one up and swap it out.

I got a nice alum. bed, HS Stock on a .300 wm LR build I got and it works and feels pretty good. Does the model in synthetic-HS have a nice feel and palm-swell for shape ? That might just keep me satisfied if the stock is pretty decent. I can shoot some duracoat @ home on it also. To custom it a little too.
.
....thanks for the reply

the CZ 527's that I have all have the factory set-triggers...the one that I shoot at the bench most of the time has a set-trigger pull of about 4 ounces....

the three rifles were purchased about 6 months apart and I dont know if it is production line differences or manufacturing change but there are slight differences in the contour and feel of the three triggers, they all break and shoot great but the shape and feel to my finger is different....

jump vs accuracy...the super-sonic and sub-sonic that I ended up using in all three rifles seem to like being set to the lands or .003 or .004 pushed into the lands....not saying it's right or wrong it's just the combination that works for me....all three shoot sub-MOA

the HS stock that comes with the CZ synthetic varmint has an aluminum bedding block, somewhat vertical grip with a palm swell....

looks like my reamer on the neck is micing out @ .334
I rolled it very gently around it. so as not to booger it up in any way. So thats sounds nice I can start with .223 brass to see if it fuctions well.

4 oz. is a little light for me... , but sounds like the stock factory TG's are GTG for my use.
.
edit to add:
I did go down today @ the sportmanswarehouse to pick-up a few box's of 175's and some #15. While was there I saw one of those CZ's in the .223 Kevlar Stock and Varmint model. Pricey little shits. They are a lot-$ for a CZ .223 short action but in the long run they might be the best way to go for a Donor. Not much more to do with it than Chamber up a new barrel blank and re-barrel it, and your GTG .
They were a little on the spendy side. sportsman's wanted 699-$ on the retail price. A little more than I was planning for a Donor but. They are a SWeeeeeet little 'complete' factory rifle package I have to admit and shame to tear-down for a Donor. The Stock has a nice feel, ridged and I think is also Alum. Action Bed also. Nice palm swell like the HS i got already on a LA Win.

I had a 300-221 built on a CZ action... it may not be the stiffest action but it sure makes a handi rifle. I used a Mike Rock barrel 1:8, actually the rifle was put together by his shop. Good thing your going to use a authorized CZ smith. From what I understand the CZ is metric thread... and it can be a real bear removing the barrel... I haven't finished testing it but I was shooting it yesterday at a milk jug at 100 yards. 5 shots could be covered with a nickel... The set trigger is trick. Send me your email address and I'll send to some pictures.... By the way I only shot 240 grain SMK's

hey pm sent with hm. e-mail
I pulled a trigger on a couple CZ's in the Long Action and I thought they were more than beefy enough and ridged Action.
Never owned one or even shoot one in a short action though. But for it going to be subsonic 30-221 only It will not be getting too much of a pounding. ..

I got two Rocks in .30 cal. .308 and .300wm. I am satisfied with those two barrels on my two field rifles for sure.
How much of a wait time did you have on yours ? Did you get Stainless or CM on it ?
I did get one of the rocks in stainless and that deep flute they offer. with 11.27 twist 5R. It's on my .300wm, and it's a nail-drivin sombitch with 190's @ 2900 fps.

I'm going to the expo gun show on Sun. afternoon to maybe catch somethng in Sako/tikka or a CZ Action with detatch Mag.
