Just ordered an Encore rifle (16.25" barrel length) from SSK, and bought a can. This is my first subsonic endeavor. Hope I made a good choice! Went with the .302 because of better supersonic capabilities, should I ever choose to use it that way, and JD said it's just as good for subsonic as the .300.
Any input would be appreciated.

the Whisper range has been extended with the .302 Whisper (7.62 x 38), lntended for chambering in guns designed for the 7.62 x 51....it's kinda like a .308 winchester short.....(see pic)

thanks for the education... looks like another great one from J D Jones...
The 302 looks similar to the 30BR. I have a wildcat similar to this that I put together a while back. Mine is mostly just a shortened 308. I get about 2600 fps with 150gr bullets if I recall correctly. The subsonic loads work pretty good but not as good as the 300Whisper since the powder space is higher. I wanted a more dual purpose cartridge and got it with this solution.

to .308. It's a better solution for single shots like the Encore, according to JD, and gives a little more powder capacity for supersonic.
I'm guessing it may be a LITTLE louder than the .300 Whisper? Don't know for sure?

Any updates?
I have a lot of Lapua 6BR brass and a new Shark can in need of use.
I am looking for data for 220-240 gn bullets.

Kurtz, there is no picture on your link (possibly due to the server change?)
Does anyone else have a picture to share?
Also I was just on the SSK website and there is no mention of the 302 Whisper. How new is this?

So it looks like nobody has any actual hands on experience with it.
Looks like I might have to get a 300 instead...

I just got off the phone with SSK. I asked JD about some 302 data/info.
That didnt go well.
I even asked about buying data, I was not looking for a free-bee.
Oh well.
At least now I know where to not spend any of my $$$.

So what's the difference...or was the wheel reinvented?

From what I can tell through pics, its a 30BR throated long.
I explained to JD that I had the barrel, reamer and a throating reamer. I just wanted to get/buy some info.
He said "buy a complete gun from me and I will give you data."

Yep- he can be a jerk like that. He is short sighted and thinks he is protecting his product. He should be helping others as it would increase his business. I have spent more money shooting my rifle than the price of the rifle. Who cares that I did not buy the gun from him he should still want me to spend money but guess not.

Sierra edition 5 has 30 BR load data. Why not use that as a starting point?

Its all supersonic data that only goes up to 200 gn bullets.
This should give you an idea of what to expect with subsonics in a case similar to the 30BR:
Sierra 220gr/ 2400 10.2gr/ Win primer
Sierra 220gr/ 5744 11gr/ Win primer
Sierra 220gr/ 4759 11gr/ Win primer
Sierra 220gr/ Trail Boss 8.0gr/ CCI 200 primer
With a 150gr hunting bullet, you should be able to get 2600fps or better with H4198 powder.
