Guys

Posted this yesterday but it hasn't stuck.

Have been working on the 458 SOCOM with 500 and 550 grain loads. Loaded both with 15 grains of Trail Boss.

The 500 grain Hornady RN, as a conventional bullet shape and flat base, sits well on the powder and has room for some more (0.5 to 1 grain) before the powder compresses.

The 550 grain Predator VLD is long and compresses the powder column.

Both shot for group at 50. Both delivered good hunting accuracy of about an inch (big bullets always make the group look bigger) from a slightly wobbly rest. The 550 VLDs put 2 shots in one hole. The 550 VLDs also seem to start tumbling after hitting the target.

No velocities but bullets were subsonic.

Rikky,

What OAL are you loading the predators too?

I got the call from the gunsmith today saying my 458socom is finished so i will have it in a few weeks after its been cerakoted. I have a 8 twist pacnor and my goal was to play with predators with it as i have access to a few hundred of them and a 1.5kg tub of trailboss.

The rifle is a stevens in a McRee stock running AI mags so i can load it out to 2.9".

I have been using 15gr Trailboss for a while with 405gr Rem and gets 975 - 1000 fps from my 9" AR. It is the quietest and cycles my AR. Good on hogs and deer. Burns too quick for my 16" bolt gun. Use 13.2 Unique in it for 1025 fps.
