Wow, things have sure slowed down....new .338BR

The board hasn't moved for a while...looks pretty slow. Here is a few pics to maybe light things up again.
The Desert Tactical SRS with the new short handguard and a barrel I just finished in .338BR. The can is for my .338Lapua Mag barrel but works great on the junior .338 round especially in subsonic mode. There is a picture of the .338 BR round loaded with a 200gr Hornady SST at about 1900fps working up toward 22 or 2300fps, a 300gr SMK at 1060fps and the old standard .308 winchester for comparison. This rifle is a quick change barrel type and the bolt, barrel and mag are swapped for cals with different rim sizes. There are 3 bolt faces available to fit most rifle rounds. .308 and its derivatives, 300 win mag and .338 lapua mag. I'm working the oddballs here and have .338LM/12.7X48 (510w equivalent) along with the .308 bolt and a .338BR/6.5X47(if I can come up with some brass for the 6.5) and who knows what other rounds I'll barrel it up for.

By the way, the pictured barrel is a pacnor 1-8" twist 5 groove stainless with a 17" length. Looks a lot shorter doesn't it?

How would you rate the Pac-Nor barrel, have you ever had an issue with the blanks they produce. Do you have any accuracy reports for this set up with the 300gr MK.

Those DTA rifles are pretty cool. If I didnt have a small fortune wrapped up in Accuracy International rifles, I would most likely be shooting them.

As of right now I have no accuracy data on the Desert tactical setup with this barrel. I've only fired 2 shots to check the chamber and function. The weather here is cold and windy so not very conducive to testing. I'll get to that in the not too distant future. The barrel is 17" long and I'm not sure of the overall length. The can is 10.5" and on my 26" .338 Lapua mag barrel it has the same overall length as the SAKO TRG42 with no muzzle brake....about 47". I'm guessing from that info that the length with the can is about 38" and without is about 27.5" . I'll get out the tape measure today and let you know.

As for the PacNor barrel blanks they've been pretty good. I like the Lilja barrels better but the wait time is even longer. If I'd known PacNor was going to be 14 weeks on the last batch I'd have gone with Lilja....both are good barrels and I've had no problems with either. The Lilja's just seem to machine nicer. I've decided that with suppressors the only way to go is stainless. The cans condense too much moisture out of the powder gasses and chrome/moly takes a lot of care and cleaning to keep from rusting.

I'll get back with answers as soon as I can get them....

The can has done a couple torture tests to make sure it can handle the heat and pressure. This can is the first one I built and I wanted to make sure it would handle it before building and selling others. There are about 6 or 7 of them out there now. We did a rapid fire 50rd test with .338 lapua. I had 2 friends loading mags while I unloaded them as quickly as I could cycle the bolt and pull the trigger. The lapua round uses just under 100gr of powder so its unlikely that a .300 win mag or anything smaller could overheat the can on a bolt gun. It wasn't intended for use on semi's so I'm not too worried about that. I am using it on the subsonic (or supersonic) .338 BR because it fits the rifle and works very well though I have built an aluminum version of the can for dedicated .338 BR use as well. The problem is that they keep getting sold so I'm stuck with the heavy can.....

It is funny, Because in the early 90's a French sound moderator manufacturer kind of borrowed the 500 whisper of Jd Jones to create the 510 Anthis.
The first few rifles were produced on the base of the erma SR 21 I believe.
Which was a modular receiver with barrels in 308, 300win mag or 338 lapua.
And stopson were chambering their own barrels in 510 anthis for that rifle. there used to be one for sale in an old Shotgun news in the USA.

That was early 2000.

So the the Desert tactical is certainly a good rifle, made in USA, but nothing new under the sun.

The Principle of clamping the barrel in the receiver and having the bolt locking into the barrel is from the 80's I believe.
That design was used by Giles Payen, the father of the PGM ultima ration (1990 production for the first few ones)

Sauer was also using that design on their Sauer 90.

Actual measurements done tonight....39" overall with the can and 29" without.

Thanks D-Mon for the info. I did remember the french Anthis round though I didn't know about the rifle. I know there was another rifle very similar to the SRS that was made in Germany a few years back. I think it was the inspiration for the SRS. They could be had here in the states but were very expensive and hard to get. It was called the DSR-1 and may have been offered in the Anthis cal as well. As you say.....nothing new.
