Howdy Gents,
I had an interesting conversation recently with a friend that has many years experience with suppressors but no experience with the .300 Whisper per se.
We were discussing the relative value of different 5.56 loads we had developed over the years for suppressed work. At one point he mentioned that he purposely avoided what he called "thin-skinned" bullets because he had experienced some of these coming apart. This, of course, would be supersonic...he specifically mentioned Hornady's SPSX and V-Max designs. His opinion is that these are fine bullets for their intended use, but he would not run them through his suppressor because of baffle strike concerns.
That started me thinking...two of my favorite loads for my .300Wh are a 110gr. V-Max load (chronyed @ 2300fps) and a load using Nosler's excellent 125gr. B/T (chronyed @ 2200fps). Both have worked phenomenally in my ArmaLite built .300; demonstrating excellent accuracy, function and no signs of overpressure. The Nosler load I used to take my first "Whisper coyote" back in 2008 when I finished my build.
That was before I received my YHM Phantom 7.62...
Now, the vast majority of ammo I have run through the firearm & suppressor have been subsonic for the purposes of testing and evaluating these new sub- loads. I did run some 150gr. FMJ-BT loads running @ 1800fps, these were military pull-down projectiles and no issues were encountered.
I do want to do some suppressed hunting for varmint and other game and am wondering if any of you out there have run supersonic through your cans?...what projectiles have you used with success and more importantly have you used any of the thin jacketed bullets without baffle strike issues?
