Does anyone have a resource they'd like to share of where they get the heavier hpbt's? I ask, because most of the places around here want an arm and part of a leg for the Sierra 220's, and most want to tell me there is no such thing as a 240. According to Sierra's website, the 240 SMK is like $44 a hundred. What I'd like is to be able to feed the beast something heavy without breaking the bank... Or should I just stick with something like the 180's, 190's and 200's? Would I even be able to tell the difference? One last thing, if I was to go with 180's, would I be able to shoot them both accurately, supersonic and subsonic, out of a 1in 8 twist Model 1 sales upper?
Thanks.

$23.49/50 SMK HPBT 240 grain
$193/500
Colorado is that you? :)
Before its all over with you may be exactly right about parts availability because I seem to be getting the run around now. :(
Had to dump about 300 rounds of 9mm subsonic downrange today just to make me feel better.
Oops guess I ought to say something about reloading in this thread. interceptor I have been using the Speer 200 gr SP for my 7.62 subsonic loads in the past and I am hoping they will work for the 300/221 1:8 as well. Good bullet and at less than $10 per 50 a little easier on the pocketbook.

Interceptor,
I am currently using Sierra GameKing 180 bt. They are a bit expensive, so I am working up some loads using Remington and Winchester 180's. They run about $60 per 500. I am getting them from MidwayUSA.
The loads that I am leaning toward for 3-gun matches are:
For major power factor (PF) 180 at ~1800 fps. Currently,
For the 3-gun matches that use rules where you need 308 Win. of higher PF, like superstition mountain mystery 3-gun match. I use 180 g at ~1100 fps for all the close in stages and 125 g bullets at ~2300 pfs for the long range stages. These loads do not make major... but I don't want to.
When I run the subsonics (~1100 fps) load, I often get peoples attention. (i.e. what the hell are you running?) There is almost no recoil with these loads. The recoil if just like the recoil I get with my STI 40 s&w.

So far I have on hand to use for .300 Fireball:
IMR4227 already had this for .30 Herrett
H110 as of yesterday
Speer 180gn fbsp
Nosler 200gn spitzer
Sierra 155gn hpbt PALMA MATCH
Hornady 150gn rn
Hornady 180gn rn
CCI and Fed sr primers
I'm figuring on trying the H110 on the 200gn Noslers and maybe some of the 180gn Hornadys as a subsonic load, and my 4227 for the 150gn rounds which will be supersonic. I have 2 chronos, so I will be able to tell what I'm doing.
Tonight's project will be to replace the plastic carbine forearm with a YHM 12" freefloat and install a milled gas block. Boresight my Leupold 12x later in the week. Expecting my dies later in the week and the brass from Kieth Davis in a week or so (give or take). Good thing I've got other projects going on or the waiting wouldn't be pretty!
Whatever load data I come up with I'll be sure and share. Usually around here it's 80 to 90 % humidity, and about 20 feet above sea level.

Hi Interceptor,
Woodleigh bought out a 240gn RN to celebrate 100 years of the 30-06, I havnt actually loaded any yet so I cant tell you how they perform but they are not as costly as the sierra's, there code is 65g, they are an Australian company and do export overseas as some of the big ammunition suppliers use their bullets.
