Savage Rifles

Anyone tried to use a Savage as a base for a Whisper project. I contacted Pac Nor and they can do a barrel for the Savage for $360 approx. Figure a short action Savage could be handy and the barrels are easier to change,:confused:

Yup, If you look in the pics there is a stainless one with a Choate Stock. Great rifles for converting to .300 Whisper or any other caliber cause once you learn the trick it takes all of 10 minutes to switch calibers...

I built my first whisper on a savage 200. I was able to buy a rifle from a friend for 225. I purchased the barrel from Sharpshooter supply. They did very good work. Heavy barrel, 10 twist, 20 inch. I put the action into a fiberglass stock from Brownells. My scope of choice is a Nikon Monarch 3.3-10 with Mil Dot. I was supprised at how well the rig shoots, 1/2 moa most of the time. I have only used brass formed from military 223 with no crimp. My process is pretty simple. Clean very well, lube(I use a spray made from RCBS lube dissolved in alcohol, dries quickly) run them through the forming die. I made a jig to hold the formed brass and I cut to the shoulder on a band saw with a metal cutting blade. Then it's trim as normal to finish length.

I've seen a few Savage conversions. Savage makes a nice platform. I'm using a Remington 700 for mine, but I had the Remington already - so that's the way I decided to go.

Remington's have more aftermarket goodies made for them too - that helped concrete my decision.

Hi Malaga, I just finished building a 300 whisper on a Savage 110 and it turned out great, I removed the barrel bolt mainly just for looks, the rifle shoots well, the barrel was an MAB with 1 in 8" twist and I made it 20" in length. Shane

Thanks a bunch guys.. I bought a bunch of brass from Keith Davis (a stand up guy) and use a contender virgin valley to put 220/240 (Sierra) and 250(Hawk) downrange using a Thundertrap suppressor. Amazing.. and decently accurate.
I was thinking that I would SBR the contender but the Savage route is affordable and provides for a better platform. I was also playing with the idea of a CZ527 but the gun shoots to good now for me to take it apart.

I had this same discussion with a friend of mine just yesterday. He recommended a Remington Model 7 instead for what I want. I countered that I was thinking about the quick and cheap rebarreling of a Savage in .223. He understood that but because I had described the idea in terms of a bigger-bore version of the Chipmunk for being a light, handy rifle for plinking that would just happen to be good for deer. He pointed out that the Model 7 was all of those things and said to find a .223 that I liked and convert it.

It all depends upon what you want. For a bipoded, benchrest rifle, I'd say Savage.
