We are having a huge number of people that click here and move on without posting. Please take a second and post about your 300 Whisper (or clone), what you use it for, and your experiences with the round...

From the statistics I have running it looks like we have had about 1000 people come to this forum and we only have two posts...

Hey, great forum! (nice to know we've got a place to corral now... :D )

Last year about this time I put to gether a Model 1 sales kit on an Eagle lower. 16" CAR, A3 upper, Standard FSB, fluted and knurled FF tube, trapdoor A1 buttstock, Ergo grip, ARMS #38 SEX, Simmons Whitetail 4x EER shotgun scope, extractor D-ring, and Armforte adjustable gas tube. Rolling my own with Redding dies, H110 and Winchester .223 brass...

My intent was to build my ideal 0-200 yd. whitetail rifle. So far I've been very happy with everything but the ammo... I form from .223 brass, and originally bought a bunch of LC once fired. That stuff does not form well at all. I've since switch to commercial Winchester brass and am pleased with the results. Groups have consistently printed MOA + or - a gnat's ass. I really need to upgrade to some real optics, but for the money the little Simmons works well for deer season and makes for good go/no go field expedient rangefinder.

Cheers!

I have a .300 Whisper built on a Winchester Stealth, with minimum legal length barrel, 8 twist, and a Bi-lock for my Gemtech TPR-S suppressor.
I struggled greatly with handloads using H110, but have seen much improvement since switching to Alliant 2400 and CCI small rifle MAGNUM primers. Most loads have been with a Sierra 240, but plan on experimenting with the 220 some more.
At least you can get the the 220 by the 100.
240's are only available by the 500. Think I payed $155 from www.okweber.com.
The Winchester action doesn't seem to like to eject spend casings reliably.
They jump off the the extractor and sit in the breech. When they do eject they don't go very far. Haven't messed too much looking for a cure as right now accuracy is my main intrest.

I have yet to post because I have not completed or shot the system. I have a 10" ar barrel on order from olympic for about 2 months now. Have a stainless jp adj gas block (did everyone have to tap their own blocks?)

I am going to try to have a shorter firsh handguard than the gas block, hard to do on a 6" pistol lengh possition. Going to put a bilock on 5/8x24 threads, 1/8 twist,

hope it works with my RLL!!! in fact I mean to make it work but wont be too disapointed if it takes a bit of fiddiling

bought some of the flat base 180gr remington core-lokts, works out to about 8cents , hope to have a loaded ammo at about 10c, Mr. Davis hooked me up on the brass

I will post some pictures and such once I get the rest of the parts

I've been trying to build up an AR/300 Fireball with an older Olympic barrel for a couple of years now. I fell in love with the concept of the cartridge years ago. I think I finally have it together and meanwhile have been experimenting with reloading this round. Bought some Cor-Bon factory loads mostly as reference cartridges. Can't wait to go to the range to test.
That's my story.

Corbon loads only gave me 850fps out of my 16 1/2" barrel.
You really need a chrono if you plan to shoot subsonic loads accurately.
If you are just shooting supersonic for groups you don't really need one unless you want to run ballistic tables.

Hello Again,

I posted in the reloading section, and though its only been a few hours, I haven't seen any replies. I like the idea behind this forum and I hope it grows and becomes popular, but one of the reasons that it attracts people who don't post (I think) is because there may be a lot of people out there hunting for good reloading data on the cartridge, but there is not a whole lot of it here.
About guns: I have a Contender (bought it in 17 HMR caliber) with a 300 Whisper barrel, but haven't shot it yet because I've only just now started trying to load the caliber. The rifle has a very good trigger, and once I finally get some loads worked up for it, I'll post them here. BTW the Whisper barrel is a stainless TC barrel in 1:10 twist, so I am pretty much restricted to loads in the below-200 grain bullet area. This is OK because I really do not want to pay the outrageous price of the 240 grain Sierra bullets that are used for subsonic loads. I do have some Lapua Scenar 185 grain bullets that I am going to try working up loads for. I have seen some loads using this bullet on other websites so i will start there. Have a good day.

I get the first real/non quoted post on the new thread!!!

I just received my Model1sales 300-221 A.K.A. whisper 16" CAR, A2 flashhider, Free Float Handguards, A3 Flat-top upper, jard single stage 1.5# trigger.

From the old forum :

I haven't really had a lot of time to play with it yet however I did get a chance to put 5 rounds through it at the local indoor range.

I was shooting 220 seirra's in 221 fireball cases with 9.0 gr h110. The spent cases ejected properly but it would not strip the next round from the magazine. I was only loading 2 at a time in a 20rd DMPS plastic mag but it always looked like the second round was being over-ridden by the carrier. Manualy cycling the charging handle loaded the round properly. I worked the charging handle a few times and it feels like the bolt-carrier is riding rather roughly in the upper. I'll sit in front of the TV and cycle the gun a few times to try to work it in a bit. I have a Model1Sales 6mm PPC varmint gun that used to fail to load untill I had let the carrier wear in and now it cycles flawlessly. I'm loading another 50 rounds with 9.1gr of h110 to see if that helps as well.

So far my impression of the rifle is very favorable. The recoil is non-existand. It sounds and feels like I'm shooting a 22lr until you see the size of the holes in the paper!

Hi;
First post. I'm intrigued by this round and it's family. I ordered a barrel from Fox Ridge (TC) for my Encore just today.
I'm looking for something quiet to hunt whitetail in my back fields. Each year they build more and more homes in the area. Not that what I do is illegal, but the noise of a full-boat .308 at 06:30 sends mothers of small children ballistic (so to speak!). I'd just like to avoid the hassle with any neighbors and/or the police.
I'd like to hear from folks who have hunted with this round loaded subsonic, and how effective it is in the real world.
Are folks happy with the Model 1 brand upper A3?
I have a Colt Sporter "Competition H-BAR", Ser. CH003xxx that was made about the time of the "Ban". It has a screw-on flash suppressor, but no bayonet lug. Can anybody tell me if this is a pre-ban or post-ban gun?
Thanks.

Hi all,
I'm shooting a Contender with a SSK 10" bull barrel (1:8 twist) primarily using subsonic loadings with Sierra 220 gr and 240 gr MatchKings. Brass is Rem 221 Fireball, primers are Federal, and dies are Hornady. I originally got into the 300 whisper for the sole purpose of using it to develop suppressors (I’m a part time gunsmith and Class II manufacturer). However it is such a pleasure to shoot and the accuracy is so impressive, I wish I would have bought it a long. Most of the loads I’m shooting were developed using Quick Load and, so far, the most accurate has been Vit 3N37 with a Sierra 220 gr MK at around 1000 FPS (this load yields a load density of around 61%). The extreme velocity spread for this load has been around 12-15 FPS and group size has been around 3/8” to 1/2” at 50 yards (I currently have an Aimpoint M2 1X with a 4 moa dot which hampers accuracy testing at much beyond 50 yards). Another powder that has tested well so far has been Alliant Herco with the same bullet (load density is around 81% and extreme spreads around 10-15 FPS).

I now have 300 Whisper reamers in house and the next project will be a suppressed version built on a Rem 700 SA platform. I’m glad to know there’s finally a place for the Whisper crowd to hang out.

WOW! A forum for the Whisper.

I have been shooting the 300 Whisper for over 10 years but never new about this forum till recently.

I have one of JD's early uppers (I think it's #6) and a Contender carbine bbl as well. Also have one of his early cans (my first NFA purchase) that fits both guns.

Mostly shoot the 220gr Sierra MKHP in Rem 221 FB brass with Rem 7½ primers and AA 2015, H110, AA #9 powders with very good results.

Played with the Nosler 125 gr Ballistic Tips with sub MOA accuracy.

Working up loads with the Sierra 220 RN now.

Lastest projest gun is a bolt action Rem 788 with Hart 1:8 bbl in a McMillan A2 stock that feed from an AR-15 20 rnd mag and fitted with Joe Gadinni's excellent SWR Omega can but am contemplating having a custom can built that uses 45 ACP baffle stacks but bored for 30 cal made of aluminum with either stainless or Inconel first baffle and stainless threaded rear cap.

Thanks for the great forum.....there is always so much more to learn and share and I'm sure I'll benefit from the experience.

.

Let me know if you get a good load for the 220RN, I have not been able to get a good group past 50m(in an AR and bolt gun platform) and have had issues with them feeding.
I have discusssed a lightweight can tuned for subsonics with SRT, using the Aztech baffle system. He has the specs ready to go. I am just waiting for my other cans to clear the ATF before I commit to another can.

I have to say its one of the most fun rnds i have ever shot, its hard to not go through some serious ammo with it.

I have an 18" SSK Carbine. I primarily shoot 125-130 grain jacketed bullets over 20 grains of 296. It is very accurate and easy to shoot. I have recently been playing around with some 200 grain cast sub sonic rounds, they are not MOA but stay inside of 2" at 50 so are fun to plink with and smack the steel plate with authority. I plan to shoot a feral hog with it week after next, 125 BT @ 2300 fps, should work out well.

Ordered a 300whisper encore barrell today for my encore(I bought a frame today-No barrell in stock :( ) . I got an 18inch Fox Ridge barrell as that was a little easier on my budget than the ssk version. Wow cant wait till it gets here. I plan on shooting the factory Corbons till I can get set up to reload it. I sadly cant use a suppressor in my state for hunting which is what I want it for anyway. I will post when the barrell arrives to let every one know how it all works out.

Hi everybody,

working on my 300 whisper config, so far I have the A3 flat top and the 300 whipser barrel / suppressor. Just need to finish building it. BArrel is about 12.5" long. It was SS and I just refinished it in socom flat black from Norrell.
Planning on adding a LArue 9.0 rails and gas block, Vortex FH and Adjustable gas Tube.

Hi guys, I have been on this forum for some little time now.
I currently have a Sig 551 SWAT under construction by my local gunsmith.
The .223 remington barrel is gonna be replaced with a nice 16" Lothar Walther barrel.
The gas port might need minor adjustment, but has the advantage to be set in two different modes.
Sig originaly made this, so a fouled weapon could be more reliable.
I am now gonna be using this system to switch between Supersonic and subsonic loads.
By the way, a Sig normally destroys the cases, so my case deflector is gonna be modified as well.
I might send in some pictures in the near future.

Hey guys, I am new here, just found the forum recently. I got a couple 300's. The first one I bought is a 14 inch factory TC contender barrel. It has 300 Whisper marked on the barrel. I don't think they can mark them as 300 Whisper anymore. I got a die set with the barrel, RCBS, also marked 300 Whisper. It has a silver Bushnell Trophy 2x6 scope on it. It is probably the most accurate factory pistol barrel that I own. I have numerous groups in different bullet weights that are 3 and 5 shot groups at 100 yds that are less than an inch. This barrel loves Nosler BT's, 125's, 150's, 165's you name it. I have one 3 shot group with the 165's, and AA1680 that measures .770 at a distance of 175 yds.

The second barrel is a VVCG barrel. 16.5 inches long, 1 inch full bull, stepped back to fit the Contender frame, 1:8 inch twist. I have a Vari-x II 3x9x40 on it. I have not shot it that much, but I had bought a box of each of the bullet weights(125, 150, 220) Corbon offers and I tried them all in it, plus my handloads. It seems to like anything I put in it. Some do a little better than others, but they all shoot well from it. It will just pack the 220's on top of one another. Does anyone know what powder is in the Corbon 220's? I saved one to take apart, just haven't done it yet.

Hey there,
I just purchased a dinky stainless / synthetic T/C contender carbine carbine with a Virgin Valley 1-8' 300/221 & lightweight suppressor. The previous owner was using 240gr MK sierra's with good results so I'm having a Leupold 2.5-8x36 VX3 scope fitted with a custom dot reticle to give me hold points out to 300yards. I haven't shot the little carbine yet but the previous owner was getting 1" 5 shot groups at 200 yards. Should be just the ticket for the spooky feral goats out my way. I'm not worried about the 240gr MK terminal performance.....head & neck shots will make for a very dead goat even without expansion or tumbling. I'll keep you posted once I've received the rifle & scope back from my Smith.

Hello All,
Since my last post have made two range trips to test various Loads, all using the 220 Sierra.

Ended up with Two SubSonic Loads. One using H110 and the other using H335.
So far the H335 load seems the most promising.

When setting the JP Gas Block, ended up with 6 turns out for the H335 load.
This cycles reliably with a velocity of just about 1040 fps.
(Yes, I tapped the Block myself. Some Very Nervous Moments. SS Block.)

The H110 load is softer, quieter and will not reliably cycle the action with the current Gas Block setting.

Any news about Whisper Brass from StarLIne?

I just recieved a SSK 300 whisper M4 upper and suppressor last month. I decided to pay the extra money and get theirs for multiple reasons. One, they started it all and I'd like to support that. Two, I've met JD and he was very nice and helpfull. (It's taken me over 10 years to finally decide to actuallty do it.) Third, with these kind of projects there are always problems and I wanted someone I could trust to send it back to.

I ordered 500 rds of corbon 220 subsonic with the upper and suppressor. I've only fired 40 rds but they functioned perfect. I'm waiting to recieve a rail system that I will modify to fit, and then I need to scope it. I'll start with an ACOG but plan on a hourus vision scope.

Waiting on the arrival of PacNor blanks to start our own batch of 3 (so far) UK spec rifles. Reamers, dies and gauges have already arrived. They'll be standard (ish) ARs - but no gas in the UK. Side charging 'bolt' action all the way here... On the plus side, short barrels and suppressors are no problem...

Going with 16" barrel 1/8 twist and trying to make it look pretty also.

Just finished and test fired my Olympic barrel assembly on a RRA lower. Is it unusual to find Olys with the gas block in the pistol location? Mine is there and unmodified it cycles fine with subsonic and supersonic loads.

Sub loads are: 220g Sierra, modified 221 brass, 8.6g H110 powder, Rem 7 1/2 primers.

Super loads are: 110g ? HPs, modified 221 brass, 19.0g H110 powder, Rem 7 1/2 primers.

I was more than willing to fiddle with my new toy if it didn't work, but it has been working fine with both loads.

G'day from Australia,
I am currently load testing a 300 Whisper for a friend. It's a MAB (Australia) single shot bolt action. 30" Heavy S/S MAB barrel, 1/8 Twist. Big gun! Only just started loads last week. Way too sub sonic! Dont need a supressor when your making less noise than a .22. Getting consistant results is a whole different issue.
Also been testing a Jongmans single shot bolt action with a 15" S/S, 1/8 twist barrel. Have a 155grn Hornady A-Max load at super sonic getting 1/4 to 1/2" groups. 220grn Sierra HPBT Match getting 1/2" but just over sub sonic. Have tried 240grn pills but can't get stabilization at 100 yards. Boy do those have some torque!
Would be great to hear from some of you guys that hunt with this caliber and if anyone has any advise on this cal with long barrels.

Cheers,
caithness77

OK so I just recently got my Mod1Sales barrel to start a 300Whisper AR project. I've gt a DPMS highrise upper and handguard. Mounting a Leupold 3.5-10 VariX-III on it. Picked up the rest of the small parts from Brownells and am going to put this upper on my tack driving .223 lower. Being an engineer married to a scientist, this is an experiment not just purchase another gun to shoot. Look for more posts in the Ammo section in the future as I play with load development.

I guess it's time for me to say hello
I'm Huckleberry, I live on the far side........ of the pond  in Norway.
My whisper story started atleast 2 years ago when I got hold of a one 300 whisper brass, it has been sitting on my desk and said nothing untill this winter. After reading all I could find about this little but, Oh so cool, cartridge I got hooked. I started out with a Redding Die set and some new 223 brass, cut and formed them, then put some dummys together. Then a barrel, a reamer + a good friend with a lathe, the last item I bought was a Rem 700.Guess I have most of the parts that I need for this prodject, oh yeah I gonna make a full length silencer as well, I hope it's done in a couple of weeks, will let you know then, if my tinkering is working or not.
Thanks to you all that has given "me" their story and pictures in this forum
it helps a lot when you are shopping for ideas.

Just registered 2 minutes ago. Want to hear about personal experiences with 125gr Balistic tips on big midwestern whitetails. I was just given a Bullberry 15" stainless bull barrel for my contender. Shot it for the third time yesterday. First time with fire formed brass and already shoots into an inch or less @ over 2200 fps with 18.5 gr of H-110. With Leupold scope set @ 8X and zeroed a little over 2" high @ 100 yds I can hit 12" steel gongs with every shot @ 256 steps, or approximately 240 yds, by holding just slightly above (approx. 2") the top of the gong. That speaks well of the cartridge and the barrel because I can't shoot pistols well...I'm a rifle guy. What I want to know about is field performance and range limitations of the round. One of my reloading books speaks of that bullet used in a 30/30 contender @ about 200 fps slower (don't know why it would be slower) and it was claimed it killed deer like lightning, but should not be used past 150 yds. The cartridge is a legal round for the entire firearm deer season now in Illinois, and we are sometimes presented with corn field and dry river bed shots in excess of 150 yds, and the development of sabot slugs and the H&R slug gun has taken SOME of my attention away from bow hunting since I can now know EXACTLY where my slug will hit out to 200 yds and what it will do when it gets there. So I'm wondering if the whisper could also fall into that category. The accuracy is obviously there, but what does the bullet do at those velocities? Don't baffle me with a bunch of energy table info please. I've looked it up, but I want to hear real life experiences. My arrow has virtually no energy but kills deer better than any pre-sabot slug ever did for me so I'm a little skeptical about immersing myself in all that energy data. I haven't looked all the way through the site yet so forgive me if the info is already here somewhere. Looking forward to hearing from you all, X

I am the proud owner of a converted SIG 551 SWAT.
Currently I am waiting for some more modifications to be able to use a silencer when I am on holliday with an aquaintance of mine in Switzerland.
In the Netherlands I am unfortunately not allowed to own a silencer.

The other modification I am waiting for is a different gas tube to be able to fire subsonic .300 Whisper ammo.

I will post a photo when my project is done.

I just finished putting my second 300-221 together. It all started when I wanted to build a rifle my daughter could shoot. I wanted something that would not have too much kick and that round in an AR sounded like a good combination. I started experimenting with loads for hunting, and found some good accurate loads with 125 gr ballistic tips and 19gr H110, 3/4 inch at a hundred. I really liked the low recoil and good accuracy. Some were asking about reports on how effective it is hunting deer, and I got to take it out last season deer hunting. It turned out my little girl was not ready to shoot yet, but I took the rifle out to test it out. I shot four deer including a 180 lb axis, and they all dropped where they were shot. The distances were 70 to 110 yards. Needless to say, I was impressed. I had been hunting with an '06 for years, and it was a nice change to kill a deer without blowing a big hole and ruining a lot of meat. I took the rifle out again for turkey season this year. The first day, I killed a piglet, and walking back to the camp saw some corsican sheep. I got a good rest and shot. The nice thing about the round is that with the low recoil, I kept sight of the sheep and saw it get hit. I checked the distance later and it was over 150 yards. It had walked about 20 feet and was dead from a heart shot when I got there. The next day, I shot another pig, about 70 lbs, and again it dropped where shot. It was nice that almost no meat was lost due to the shot. We do get some large pigs that show up on occasion, and it will be interesting to see how it performs on the larger animals.

A friend and I built AR-15's in 300 whisper. Haven't had a chance to take either one to the range yet. Trying to decide how we want to build suppressors. Will most likely do them on form 1's or have a class II friend build them.

Need to see what loads each of them likes. One is a model 1 sales upper and the other is from J&T distributing. Both have Essential Arms lowers and DPMS lower parts kits.

From what I have been reading on here we need to get either an adjustable gas block, gas tube or move the gas block to the pistol position. We would like both guns to be able to use a suppressor and without along with both types of ammo subsonic and supersonic.

SSK les baer 300 whisper. 11in. 1 in 8 barrel with suppressor. Adjustable gas block. 3-9 leupold for daytime shooting and a aimpoint followed by a PVS-14 night monocular for night work. Various other do-dads such as lights etc. Used to shoot pigs.

Great site. I have a considerable amount of experience with subs and super sonic corbon ammo as well as 125 balistic tips and some other "fancy gimmicks". Do some reloading.

Thanks.

Just put to-gether my first 300 whisper. Sako 75 small action, McMillan stock, 16 1/2" 1x8 twist stainless. I used a new stainless S-7 can from Finland, Its very quiet, I think the bullet hitting the butts makes more noise than the rifle firing. Would post a pic but dont know how.:frown:
I can see lots of work at the loading bench...

I cheaped out, went the easy way. Model 1 Sales 16" A3 upper w/ a 1 in 8 twist mated to a DPMS forged lower. Had it for all of about 3 days now, still need to purchase brass and a set of dies.

edit 06/23/08 reamed the chamber so it would actually chamber a round (Model 1 SUX! ), Leupold 3x9, MagPul MIAD, Hogue carbine length free float tube, low profile gas block, A2 stock, JP adj fire control, and a YHM Phantom supressor. Can't comment on accuracy today because the first trip to the range when Ii was gonna shoot for serious the barrel nut worked loose and my groups looked like buckshot. This Sunday I hope to see its true colors. Running 9.3g H110 under a Hornady 208g A-Max, should chrono at about 1040 or so, I hope. We'll see.

edit 08/23/08: the Hornady/H110 load ran it at about 970fps, initail accuracy was REAL bad, but on the third trip to the range all of the sudden it straightened up and started to run at MOA at 100 yards. Worked up another load of AA1680 and 220gn SMK's that chronos right at 1040fps, right where I want to be. Can report on accuracy of it in a later edit.

Considering (seriously) building a Rem700 in 300 Whisper, 16"-17" Hart barrel in 1:7. Will fit my YHM can on it too.

Who do you contact to request the suppressor? I am sur ethe ATF, but anyone have the actual contact info?
I know JDJ could make one, he is typically expensive, other options?

Get in touch with a dealer who may retail supressors. You make the purchase, fill out the form 4 and send it to ATF along with the $200 tax stamp fee. Once approved, typically 3 months, the form will come back to the dealer, he will contact you and you can pick up your supressor.

Or if you have a trust or LLC already you substitute that for the personal info and the wait goes down to a month or less.

This is as I understand it a the moment, I'm sure someone who knows the process in greater detail can give you better info. There are a multitude of threads available online in discussion forums such as this one. Some great links are:

http://www.quarterbore.net/forums/showthread.php?t=174

http://www.glocktalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=199037

http://www.silencertests.com/legality.htm

http://www.gem-tech.com/legal.html

Copied from SoundTechSilencers: A private citizen may purchase a suppressor directly, BUT, in order to legally receive it he or she will have to work through a Class 3 dealer or Class 2 manufacturer in their state. You will transfer the suppressor to the local dealer through a form 3, approved by BATF, which takes a minimum of 30 days. Once the local dealer receives it, he may then transfer the weapon on a form 4 (which costs $200) to the individual. The dealer usually charges a minimum of $50 for the transfer, which usually takes a minimum of 90 days.

You can also look over at AR15.com and subgun.com for waaaay to much info on the subject. I'm setting up a trust as we speak to make the next transfer much smoother. My current SBR permit is taking way too long to come in.

I am considering purchasing a 300/221 in 1 in 8 for poking holes in paper at 100 to 200 yards at sub sonic velocities. I hear that the recoil is very moderate in an Encore, and the accuracy is outstanding. Any recommendations on where to get a barrel? How about some glass?

I went cheapy too....Model 1 upper, DPMS lower. A3 FT,C.A.R. stock, flash supressor, 1-8 twist, I upgraded the grips to the Ergos, got a red dot. I asked for the gas block front site base and they sent me the four sided picatinny one.

Getting the adjustable gas tube, a good 3-9x scope and some other CDI stuff. I was told my LE status would alow me to get a supressor in NY...sounds good, but we'll see. Hillary is still here.......

Mod 1 kit w/ upgrades.........$549.00
DPMS lower w/ tax..............$135.00
Dies from Redding................$62.00

Greetings from Finland!

I recently finished my .300-221 AR15 build.

http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/31579300_221_Cal_AR15.JPG

Test rounds were loaded to cases made from .221 Rem cases with Redding dies.

On first test bullet was molycoated 220 grs SMK on top of 12 grs N120 and CCI small rifle primers.

Accuracy was fairly good (5 shots/18mmC-C@50meters) but there was still some room for improvement as load was still supersonic.

Velocity was not measured but one can sure tell difference between super and subsonic...

Second test rounds were loaded with same components but now with 11.5 grs of N120. Average velocity was 320 m/s but this time accuracy was not tested.

On next test I'll drop powder charge maybe 0.1-0.2 grains to get some safety margin to keep velocities well in subsonic territory.

Other possible step in load development is to use N110 powder but I'm not sure if it's necessary.

Barrel is custom made by Finnish gunsmith from Lothar-Walther .30-8" stainless blank. Reamer came from PTG.

Gas system is is pistol length and barrel length is 420mm to keep gun within rifle dimensions according to local legislation.

Silencer in picture above is BR-reflex suppressor.

This forum has been very useful during my build project so I thought it's time to share the outcome of my project with you.

Just put together my first whisper yesterday. I have built a few AR15s but decided to branch out. So I cannibalized an old XM177 clone I had, dropped a M1S barrel on it and now I have a 16" .300 whisper carbine. Nothing special, just an A2 type recievers, A2 stock and CAR handguards but when I took it to the range it displayed a lot of potential for accuracy. Now to just get it to cycle properly

I'm new to the forum but I've been shooting the Whispers for years. Currently have a .300/.221 Fireball AR, a Remington 700 that I built with a .300 Whisper reamer on a Shilen Match 1in 8 twist blank, and a Custom Shop TC Contender in .300 Whisper.

I am using a Form 1 Suppressor that I built. On the Rem, I get 3/8 groups at 100 yards using 8.2 grains of AA#5 using a 220 Sierra BTMHP. Thats my favorite gun for the .300, it is very quiet and deadly accurate.

For those that recognize the name, I am a moderator on the Defensive Carry.com forum which is geared to concealed weapons carriers around the country.

Hope to get some good info here. Whispers are one of my passions.

Hello,
I just built my first .300 whisper. It's my fourth AR build. It has a 16" bbl from model 1 sales. The only load I've tried so far is with win 296 and 180GRN bullets. It really didn't work well. It wouldn't lock the bolt back, and I had one blown primer. I'm thinking the powder may be too fast with my gas port being in the carbine position, but I don't know.
Other factors may be the one piece gas ring I use in my guns. They some times take a little time to wear in and funtion properly. Also I hate the Spring noise on AR's so I added grease to the buffer assy.
Anyway, I'm glad I found this site and will be doing a lot of reading to try and figure this out.
I'd really like to find a load using powder I have on hand, especially W296 or maybe IMR 4831.
To make a short post long

I live on a high fence ranch with a 13 acre lake that is surrounded by random home owners, many in a retirement community. It's fairly rural, Deer EVERY WERE, turkeys, fox, ducks, swans, miss. varmint and pigs. I have had the law called (they were very understanding and polite,) because of people being startled by "HIGH POWERED RIFLES BEING SHOT REALLY CLOSE TO THERE HOMES!!" this is not all true. The pigs love all the limestone valleys around the property and they cause the report sound waves to be directed strait up towards 2 homes. My ar15 is quite loud and...I like to shot it...So I got a 300 whisper barrel. I'm in love with the ideal of it and have yet to explore it!!!!:uzi2:

I'm planning on mounting my Trijicon 6x48MGO on an older style MGI with an Eotech 552 on the Trij. The Trij will be sighted in for my 223 1-9twist barrel and the Eotech sighted for my 221 1-8twist Fireball barrel. With any luck I will be able to get some brass made/purchased soon and work up some sub loads. Still don't have a Can for the 300 221 barrel, working on it. Would like to get an adapter made for it that allows me to use the same Can for 308. Don't know if i can wait for it to be manufactured!!!

I live in the country on 80 acres ... but neighbors are much closer than they used to be. I have to be much more cautious about shooting that I once was. The big rifles (9,3x62 to .458 AR) are LOUD and tend to rattle windows a long way away.

Have been a handloader and bullet caster for more than 40 years.

Making arrangements to have a 1 in 8 twist 16+" barrel built with an adjustable gas block in the pistol position, a flat top upper, and a free floating handguard. Will be a pretty heavy bbl (1" behind the gas block and .750" in front of the gas block). Hope to be able to afford an SAS Titanium suppressor next year maybe.

Have dies and am playing with making brass from 5.56 LC brass.

Looking forward to playing with a "little gun" and then a quiet gun for a change.

Really appreciate the information available on this forum. Thanks Guys!

I just recently got my 300 built! I am using a custom made 8.5" Bartlein bbl that my brother chambered. pistol gas system with an adjustable gas block from tp555. LaRue 7.0 handguard and an SAS 30 cal suppressor.

making the LaRue handguard jive with tp555's gasblock was NOT fun. I had to grind the sharp corners off of the gasblock and totally dissassemble the block. I then had to do surgery on the handguard and remove some material. Assemble upper and slide the gasblock into place and reassemble it in place.

All in all it was worth it (I got what I wanted) .. but I aint rushing to do that again!

Greetings all!

I guess I've been lurking here long enough and it is time to now make a post!

I've been shooting the 300 Whisper (subsonic) from a 10-3/4" T/C for several years now in IHMSA. It won me a couple State and International Big Bore trophies. It's one hell of a good Big Bore round!

I've been handloading for almost 10 years now for conventional & several wildcat calibers for IHMSA and benchrest work on a Lyman turret press and as an IDPA shooter produce prolific amounts of 9, 40 & 45 rounds on a progressive press.

Over the last couple of years I've gotten BRD (Black Rifle Disease) and have built a couple and bought an RRA Varmint A4 as a bench gun and it has done an amazing job at making small groups.

I am FINALLY able to get one of JD Jones's 300 Whisper uppers. I met with JD two weeks ago and now have a custom 300 W upper on order!

I'm building a RRA lower with the national match trigger group for it. I haven't quite decided what type of glass I'm going to put on it, but do want a tactical optic in the 3 to 10 or 12x range. Likely will go with a 30mm tube and mil-dot reticule to take advantage of the higher level of elevation adjustment the Whisper needs when using both subsonic and supersonic rounds.

I very much look forward to contributing my experience to our group here with the Whisper upper and can't wait to see what kind of loads I come up with and how small a group it will print for me both in sub and supersonic modes!

Advice on any facet of my new adventure is greatly welcome & appreciated.

Thank you!

Best regards,
Dino

I have been a gunsmith for over 25 years and have been watching this forum for a while now. I have been playing with subsonic rifle rounds for about a two years whenever I have a couple of minutes here and there. I have just started to introduce a new line of custom rifles called the Thumper line. They are all based on the K.I.S.S. principle. The first one we are producing is the 50 Thumper built on a Remington 700. We will be coming out with the .338 Thumper shortly which will be based on an AR platform. The 50 Thumper is desititing on Hogs. You can see the 50 Thumper on our website and we will have the 338 Thumper up shortly.

Topped with new SuperSniper 10X HD (for now) and suppressed with YHM 7.62 Phantom.

Range report to follow.

I'll be looking around on the forum for favorite recipes.

I just picked up a 10.5" bbl from tp555 a couple of weeks ago. This is a SBR AR build for my wife. I'd been using a 6.8spc loaded w/150gr SP's & AA#9 for subs, but cycling was so-so and I was key holing pretty badly at 100yrds. I decided I'd pick up a whisper and give it a shot for her instead. I'm just waiting on a stamp so I can starting building her can. Until then, I'll just use my HVT and see what I can come up with.

I currently have a Model 1 Sales upper for my AR (and am still trying to work up a suitable subsonic load for it). I also have a Remington 700 that I will be building up as soon as my McGowan barrel gets here. I'm going to assume there's no real need to make the barrel longer than 20 inches? I also have a Howa 1500 that I may convert later on (if I can get metric change gears for my lathe). I have also finally obtained a TC Contender, and will be shopping for barrels for it.

I am just starting on two builds myself... The 300 Whisper round looked like a neat little round. So, I ordered a chamber reamer and headspace gage from PTG at Shot Show. So far, I have made a size/trim die for the Dillon trimmer using the chamber reamer, it works ok for now. It takes 223 brass in, rough sizes and trims the brass to the 300 Whisper profile, but it is still just a tad bit long and still has to be final sized and trimmed to lenth. I am plannig to make a proper size/trim die in the next month, that way I only have the one step. I also had to modify a XL650 toolhead so the trimmer die would work properly, but so far it works like a champ. I found two 24" barrel blanks at the Crossroads show a few weeks ago for $50ea.:nanabang:

The first build is for the AR platform, I cut 11" off the barrel blank and will be turning it down to either 10 or 10.5" overall. The muzzle will be threaded 5/8x24 for a QD YHM Phantom. I have a YHM Diamond Series Spector FF tube, Sun Devil slick side flat top receiver, Mil-spec CTR stock and MOE PG, Young Manufacturing chromed BCG, a Trijicon Reflex 8 min scope and YHM front and rear flip up sights that I'll use to assemble this thing. I haven't decided on the brand of lower that I'll use, but will probably use a Sun Devil lower to match the upper.

The next build is going to be off a Savage 112 host that I picked up cheap just for this build. I am just waiting on the barrel nut wrench so I can take the old 223 barrel off. I'm planning on turning the barrel to 13.5" and permently attaching a YHM QD 308 mount so I don't have to SBR this. I have a 30mm Super Sniper scope sitting on the shelf that is just screaming to be put on this rifle and will match the Choate Super Sniper stock that came with the rifle.

I'm thinking of an ACU camo pattern for both builds to finish them off.

Right now I'm just taking my time till my reloading dies get here. I just ordered a 2 die set of Reddings from Midway but are Backordered.

If everybody wants, I can start another thread showing the progress on the builds, I have taken a few pictures of the work I've done so far on the rifle builds.

I have a 10" SSK barrel for my Contender. It shoots all ammo I've loaded in it great. I have yet to take an animal with it. As soon as I get home from Iraq, I think a hog hunt is in order. :nanabang:

I went the AR route, too.

Built on a MEGA billet upper/lower set, Jewel trigger with KNS pins, Mike Rock (Rock Creek) blank finished by ABS (16"), YHM free float tube, 3 position (carbine) gas block (port opened to .120)... A1 stock (still playing with the buffer... would like a rifle length, carbine weight buffer but can't find one). BCM FA IonBond Bolt/BCG, and Gunfighter charging handle.

Thought I would pop in and introduce myself. I am a long time (40+ years or so) shooter and have shot competition for the past 35 or so. I am a semi retired LEO/civilian firearms instructor. I served in the Cav and owned a brick and mortar gunshop for 20 years. These day I teach pro bono only and shoot mostly for fun. There was a time tho when I took shooting much more seriously and this pic of me (I'm on the left, my Dad is on the right and some of you may recognize the gentleman in the middle...lol) shows I am no stranger to shooting the Whisper...this was a Bianchi Cup style competition using all suppressed rifles...a match I won btw...

These days I am trying to decide on a new Whisper project, likely the .338 Whisper in a bolt gun.

I have a savage FP10 that was re-barreled to 300 whisper, and a short ar upper formy RR M-16. Suppressor is a TBA QAS30. The savage with factory cor-bon 220gr ammo is quieter than an air rifle. I have used the 300 with 150gr hunting loads for deer and it works GREAT. For some reason I cannot get my pictures to load

Here's my new build 300 Fireball. The upper is from Model1Sales.com, 16 inch barrel, .120 gas port at the carbine position, adjustable gas tube (see second picture), home machined lower, home machined silencer (with tax stamp), 1-4x28 scope, MagPul Flat Dark Earth furniture.

I am amazed at how gentle the recoil is with the silencer. This is a very fun to shoot rifle.

Hello,
I am new here tonight,,, just got my wisper last week,
Cz527 LH action set trigger
pacnor 1-6.5 yes 1-6.5 twist, factory contour. 16.5 inch
using rp brass stepped up with 4 expanders in a sinclair die (6, 6.5, 7mm 30)
Trident 9mm silencer
3x10 Weaver- miday scope with Mildot recticle ($300 sale price)
Nice looking gun.

My idea was to have a rifge that I can kill a deer with and not have everybody in the area know that I shot. Was thinking that I would need to make a head shot for a clean kill.
50 yards from pulling into the range to fire test loads on Sat. I noticed a large road killed deer,,,,,, after firing 10 rounds I walked over to the deer and put one thru the boiler room, flipped it over and found no marks,,, (This deer was not here Fri. evening - fresh).
Went and got a peice off cardboard to place under deer, and shot thru the heard shoulder and high shoulder near spine using 220 smk at 1050 fps. Flipped the deer over and found that aLL THREE SHOTS HAD GONE THRU IT AND ALL TUMBLED!
The way I see it a shot in the lungs in gonna turn things into jelly,,, not ruining any meat.
Maybe my son can show me how to post pics.

I bought my 300 Whisper from SSK/JD in January and took delivery early Feb. It is built on an AR-15 Upper, currently set on my S&W M&P15 lower...I finally have the parts to build my lower and hope to get to that in the coming weeks.

ALSO, I just picked up my suppresor this past Friday from SSK as well. complete turn-around time was less than two months (submitted paper work 2/4 certified mail, approved 3/15 and received 3/24). I used the LLC route and it worked great! I was able to shoot 20 rounds this weekend and a buddy said it was no louder than a paintball gun.....pretty cool!

I wish I had a better pic but this is all I got for now. Its a 300 Blackout I assembled myself I really Love the round and once you get the brass formed it is easy and fun to reload. I have tried bullets from 110-220 grains and everything in between and have had good results with most.

Magpul MOE Stock, Grip and TG in FDE

Definately new here but I purchased my TC barrel from SSK many many years back when I was shooting IHMSA silhouette. 15" barrel that I put a sight package by DZ Arms. Haven't shot it in quite some time. Wouldn't mind getting back into it either. Won't say I was the first in the area to start using this round, but was definately one of them. The third and unfortunately last internationals I went to was in 1997.

I remember the first round I send down range. Heard the hammer go click, didn't feel anything expected in the way of recoil and thinking what did I do wrong. Needless to say this doesn't kick much with subsonic 220gr Sierra MatchKings.

Hi, I'm another Aussie who's been lured by the 300/221. Mine is a Sako A1 action with a recycled TrueFlight Palma barrel. Yet to fire it, I have to finish the stock first. I'm forming my brass from ADI (Aussie mil stuff) and Win, Federal and Lapua. Not mixing them up, just trial and error on the expendable stuff. I'll be shooting supersonic with light bullets.
I gotta admit to being a bit envious of you guys with the toys you have access to !!
Here's a pic of my stock, partly shaped in a pantograph,a fellow AHN member copied the inlet and grip from a Sako sporter for me and I'll finish off the rest to my liking.

I'm shooting a Savage bolt action with a Shilen 300-221 barrel. I had some Sierra 125 gr FNHP bullets on hand and loaded them in front of 17.5 grains of Lil Gun powder backed by a Wolf small rifle primer. The load worked so well that I've seen no reason to try anything else. I'm only using it for a fun/varmint gun right now and have had a blast with it. Eventually I will develop some loads with pointed bullets and also a load for deer. Anyone out there that is thinking about building a 300 Whisper. My advice would be "Do it". It is lots of fun.
