I was making some 510 Whisper cartridges this afternoon (Sako TRG) and when I looked up at some SOCOM cases that needed sizing..... well you get the idea. A 650 AP when inserted into a SOCOM case thats had a 50 cal expander run down it,swells the neck out to .535 whereas the base is .538. I'm guessing when you put a few thousand CUP's to it, the case walls will straighten out
Afterward I got to looking at Skinner's "Cartridges of the World" and found the "50 American Eagle" described as a 50 Action Express opened to accept 50BMG projectiles... blah ..blah.... achieves about 1000 fps!
Starline describes the SOCOM case as a 50AE based case lengthened to 1.575 and the 50 AE is 1.285 so we have .290 more case length ....to stuff full of powder?
I know headspacing off the case mouth isnt "ideal" but its not impossible and it will work without much brass flow at low pressure (subsonic).
No, its not a Whisper, but the brass is cheap and I dont have to spend hours on the lathe to come up with a hundred cases. I think I'll order a reamer t'morrow.
I might have to try this on a Savage..............

Hello Scoop,
interesting discovery.
Tell me, could it be possible to form cases like the socom from 6.5/284 or 284 case? what are the differences between the two (in diametre of course, for the length i know the 284 is much longer than the socom).
What about using the 300 wsm case as abase? (with a magnum boltface here of course).
It is just that outside of US of A it is hard to find Starline made socom cases.
I am looking at the alternatives.
How does your 510 whisper shoot?
Thanks.

The 300 WSM is too large in diameter at body /shoulder juction to hold the bullet tightly. By the time you get far enough down the case to pic up both thicker brass and bullet tension you end up with insuffucient volume. The Remington Ultra mags didint seem to work out either. That being said Dave at PTG reamers says there is a 50 caliber RemUltraMag based reamer he made out there somewhere. From the reamer print he sent me it isnt small either.
Both brands of brass are so deviant in thickness through the body of the case.... it bulges the outside walls oddly as the bullet seats. I think I'm begining to get a clue as to why Lapua brass usually offers better consistancy.
Weatherby brass, from what JD Jones tells me works well also... But at $2.00+for Weatherby it seems as the 338 Lapua is the logical chioce.
The SOCOM brass is a custom based on the 50 AE from Starline Brass and when sectioned is amazingly consistant in taper and thickness.
The 510 shoots like a lazer.... well more like a Rainbow actually:grin:

Hello Spook,
regarding the socom brass, I forgot to mension that it was for a .458 project, not a .510 . That would obliously require a shoulder like on the socom to go down to .458. What is the base diametre of a wsm case and of a 284 case compared with a socom case? is it possible to make socom cases out of one or the other? (to shoot .458 bullet?)
6.5/284 brass is very consistent because made by Norma, so are some wsm and the weatherby range. that is why I looked at this cases.
Well ,if the 510 whisper shoots like a laser with the colors of a rainbow, you must have consummed to much beers:grin:
Thanks.

6.5X284 .500
300 WSM .555
300 RUM .550
SOCOM .538
D.....at the risk of sounding pessimistic...I'm thinking the really easy way to do the .458...Get with Huntingtons or RCBS and buy .458 X 2" dies and headspace off the belt. The .450 Alaskan also comes to mind but thats a rimmed case.
If you are good at building dies the WSM's and the RUMs could be necked down without much issue, but there won't be much shoulder and there will be less volume (believe it or not). I sectioned the WSM,RUM and SOCOM brass and was surprised to see the SOCOM at SOCOM length was the most voluminous.
Why isnt Starline available to the UK? I thought you guys were "friendlies"?

Hello Spook, thanks for the info.
Actually I am French, I have been living in the UK for 7 years.
Now I am in New Zealand where starline brass should be available. but all my toys are in France because I have not made my mind yet of where I want to leave. Once I know where I want to live, I will start my project in either country. But also France is part of nato, the UN and the G8, it is not always perceived as a friendly country regarding the export from the US of ammunitions and its components. Some things are hard to find over here.

I looked at this and then remembered my gunsmith has a 450 Marlin reamer. The 450 Marlin is basically the 458x2" with a fatter belt. You can buy cheap 450 Marlin dies, cheap 450 Marlin cases and factory ammo. Of course if you don't mind making the cases you can use any H&H based brass to make the 458X2".
